Pre-race routine:

Got up early, like to get to the venue early, had some oatmeal, using the hotel coffeemaker, then a bagel. Later had a banana on the drive to the race.
Event warmup:

No warmup.
Race scheduled to starrt at 6:15, which is before sunrise, so I did not want to warm up on the bike, which is my norm, in the pich dark, and
Swim
  • 34m 6s
  • 1584 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt preety good about the swim, but my time and placing was alittle slower than I expected/hoped. Long starting line gave plenty of room for the 100 person start so never felt crowded. I fact after most of my wave pulled out infront of me I had plenty of room till the next wave caught up. On the return trip things picked up once I past the sprint turn buoy and got mixed in with the sprint waves.
What would you do differently?:

Training, and then more training.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Good transition, 16th in ag, things went smoothly, in fact things moved so quickly I was sure I forgot something.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to move faster, especially running from water to bike. Will work on using shoe on pedal technique this off season
Bike
  • 1h 25m 36s
  • 27 miles
  • 18.92 mile/hr
Comments:

This course was more technical than I'm used to. NE wisconsin just isn't as hilly as southern Wis. Lots of rolling hills and climbs had me chaning gearing more than I'm used to, but I think I did fairly well. Lots of bikes on the course made taking the best corner sometimes difficult.
At on point the wind was a tailwind and the road was long and straight, and I seemed to just fly past everyone. Gotta love tailwinds.
There were 2 or three points on the course that had mojor bumps and theree were water and gel bottle and gel packs, etc scattered everewhere, luckly I didn't lose anything off my bike.
One section (1.5 miles) was all patched asphualt, quit bumpy, but there always seemed to be a smooth path through the worst of it, you just had to look ahead and plan any passing carefully.
Transition 2
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Put on socks for the run. I find this is better than doing it during t1 as my legs can use the extra rest now as opposed to earlier in t1. But t2 overall went smoothly and my time was average for my AG.
Run
  • 1h 01m 19s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Did I mention that the course was hilly. Slowed to a walk in two spots for the steepest sections. Alittle slower than I wished for but still happy with my preformance overall.
As I was finishing my run I past Rob (pseudoyams) starting his HIM run, that was a switch.
As an amateur astronomer, having the historically significant Yerkes Observatory as part of the course was somewhat special.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on hill running this offseason. As if I didn't know that already.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate Drank, be merry.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Gravity

Event comments:

Given some comments from past years, I was worried about the organization of this race. But it really wasn't that bad.
There seemed to be enough volenteers, although some things did seem to be set up fairly inefficently, especially registration, get there early and expect to wait.
Course talk during the pasta dinner was difficult to understand.
Bike course was adequately marked and there was alway someone in front of me to follow anyway. Although different color arrows marked the oly and him course and there were no instructions as to what the colors meant. This was not a problem during the race, as larger signage was up to give direction, buty did cause me some confussion when I tried driving the course the evening before.
My one real complaint is that the start was 45 min later. It wasn't so much late as the start was scheduled to eaarly (before sunrise). THis meant setting up in the pitch dark, and no warmup. If they'd actually started on time, the lifegaurds would not have been able to see the HIM start so the delay was definitely necessary it just should have been scheduled that way to begin with, I could have had an extra hours sleep. Also not knowing when the Oly waves were going to start meant hanging out around or on the beach instead of warming up in the water.
The venue though is really great. The water is fairly clear, the bike and run course is challenging and scenic. The run by Yerkes was great.

Overall I really enjoyed the race and plan on doing the HIM next year. A good last triathlon to finish off my first season.
