Swim
Comments: I finally got into some coached sessions at my local Master's program and felt really confident going into the swim (for the first time ever), and coupled with my actual warm-up, I swam well. I did run out of gas about halfway through and had to sidestroke to catch my breath, but overall I felt good about it. My goal for this year was to go under 12 minutes--when I got out of the water my wife held up her phone for me to see my time in the water, which was just over 9 minutes. Looking at the overall swim splits, I'm fairly certain they mis-measured the distance--I know I've made big improvements in my swimming, but I shaved nearly 4 minutes off last year's time! What would you do differently?: Manage my breathing a little bit better so I can get through the entire swim without having to take a break. Transition 1
Comments: As usual, I was pretty winded coming out of the water. Ran most of the way to my rack spot, but had some trouble getting the suit past my left heel. Still posted my best T1 time, though. What would you do differently?: Run all the way, maybe more lube on the ankles ... ? Bike
Comments: Couldn't really find a good rhythm on the bike--felt like I was either spinning too fast or pushing too hard. I needed an extra half-gear to find the sweet spot. What would you do differently?: I didn't ride nearly as much leading up to this year's event than I have in years past. Definitely need to get out there more consistently to keep up the fitness. I'm also going to invest in a new seat post to allow for more minute adjustments, which will hopefully address the numbness issue in the nether region I've been experiencing about 30 minutes into every ride. Transition 2
Comments: I was a little winded coming off the bike, so I spent a few extra seconds catching my breath and eating an energy gel. My wife even said I seemed to be slower in T2 than everyone else! What would you do differently?: Go faster and be in better cycling shape. Run
Comments: Terrible run. In my last pre-tri brick, I did a 1.4-mile run at a 10:09 pace, which is good for me. But I had nothing left by the time I got out on the course, and once again watched as group after group of runners blew past me. I did get a burst of energy at the end and was able to "sprint" for the last 100 yards or so, but overall I was very disappointed in this run. Post race
Event comments: I love the location, the race setting and the course. I'll definitely keep coming back every year for this one! Last updated: 2013-03-04 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:00 am, rousted the wife at 5:15 and the kid at around 5:30. Took a quick shower just to get the blood flowing, made some horribly watered-down coffee and we were on the road at 6:00.
For the first time in four years at this event, I arrived with plenty of time to spare so I was able to take my time getting set up. Got my wetsuit on, swam out to the first buoy and back and then just sort of hung out in the water to let my body get accustomed to the water.
