Total Time = 1h 14m 15s
Overall Rank = 74/196
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/10
Pre-race routine:

Ate a honey stinger protein bar and a banana. I also took a potassium pill and Shark salt pill before the start. Stuck with water to drink. All about 2 hours before the race.
Event warmup:

Rode the bike for 10 minutes before checking into the transition area. Ran for a few minutes and swam 100m before the race started. Never really do this kind of thing but I had the time. Had a honey stinger gel 15 minutes before the race.
Swim
  • 07m 26s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Chaotic in the water. Jack keeps everyone in a line and the people around me were all fairly even in ability. I was passed once and passed 4-5 people. The swim was a PR for me by time so I can't complain at all.
What would you do differently?:

I should have got on the gas a little earlier. I took the first few hundred meters a little easy before stepping up the pace.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

I decided to put my bike shoes on in transition. I don't think the time it takes to fiddle with getting in your shoes on the bike is much different than sliding them on in transition. Other opinions vary. I like being ready to go when I hit the line. Missed clipping in right away and cost me a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. Very good time for me.
Bike
  • 40m 44s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

By my garmin the course was 13.1 miles long which was longer than advertised. My watch had me at a little over 19mph. I got in the wrong gear coming back into the wind for a few miles and it cost me some time. It was a mistake that cost me second place. I have been struggling with getting in good rides this early in the year and the bike was my demise from winning the age group.
What would you do differently?:

Actually, not a lot. I spent the previous 10 days traveling and got my work in but I was really tired. Probably over achieved actually, considering my lack of rest.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Pretty good transition. The girl next to me had my spot blocked and I had trouble getting my bike racked quickly but I was in and out fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

I PR'd my run for this race. I have really been diligent all season about my running and I am getting faster by the month. I probably took the first mile and a half too easy. I had more in the tank than I gave myself credit for. I could have ramped up the pace a little sooner than I did. However, averaging 7:44 miles is very good for me.
What would you do differently?:

Get on the gas earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Grabbed my Endurox R4 from the truck and had some of the snacks they provided. Stuck around for the awards. I thought I was second and then some late arrival moved in ahead of me. I will take third without complaints. I have never had a podium finish in any race so this was really cool for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was a little tired from traveling all week. I felt good though and will get faster throughout the year. A good start to the season.

Event comments:

Jack runs a very good race. It's organized and well run. I really like doing the Ironhead Race Production races. You wouldn't regret doing any of the races he runs.
