Swim
Comments: I was a little apprehensive about this swim do to the elevation and decided to take it easy until I felt comfortable. The start of the swim was very shallow which made for a pretty hectic start. After the first hundred meters or so I had some clear water and felt very good for the rest of the swim. The elevation did not affect my breathing like I thought it was going to and I had a pretty good swim overall. After making the turn around the last bouy the water again became really shallow to the point I could touch the ground. I made the decision to stand up and walk/run through the water to the shore which definitely slowed me down. What would you do differently?: I would have continued to swim the last 25 meters or so rather than standing up and walking/running to the shore. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: First quarter to half mile out of transition is up hill to the June Lake loop. Once you make it out to the main rode it's a very easy downhill course for about 10 to 15 miles where it flattens out until you hit the 395 south. Once I made the turn onto the 395 it's an immediate ascent for the next 5 or 6 miles until you make it back to the south side of the loop. I did not think the hills were bad at all and decided to spin up the hills to save my legs for the run. Once you make it back to the loop it's about another mile or so downhill to the transition. The bike course is great with fantastic views of the lake. Very fast course until you hit the hills back up the 395. What would you do differently?: I would have pushed the downhill sections of the course harder Transition 2
Comments: Forgot quick laces for my shoes so tying shoes cost me about 20 seconds or so Run
Comments: This run/hike is no joke. Run through the sand along the beach out of transition up some hills to the paved road. Get a bit of paved road until you make a right turn up to the single track fire road. Once you make the turn and start heading up the very steep very long hill be prepared to walk/hike. It was a long hike up the mountain which slowed me down considerably but once you make it to the top there is some beautiful views. After making it to the top their are some rolling hills but nothing to bad until you start heading back down the mountain. The descent was also very steep with soft footing which was a little scary if you ask me. The finish line is on the beach with a great atmosphere. What would you do differently?: Learn to hike faster Post race
Event comments: Very fun difficult race. The race was well organized and very family friendly. I will definitely be back next year. Last updated: 2013-03-14 12:00 AM

Woke up at about 4:30 and had bagel, banana and some water for breakfast. We stayed in Mammoth so we left around 5:00 to make it to the June Lake mountain parking lot by 5:30 to catch the bus to the transition area. Caught the 5:30 bus to transition and waited to get body marked. After getting body marked I set up my transition area and walked down to the swim start area to get my timing chip. Very easy process and very organized.
Olympic distance race did not start until 8:00 so I sat down on the beach with my wife and daughters and watched the start of the Half Ironman distance race. At about 7:30 I started to stretch, put my wetsuit on and swam around a little to warm up.
