Swim
Comments: Couple interesting tidbits on the swim. First, it seemed a bit long. My Garmin showed 1.1 mile which seemed strange since I felt I sighted and swam pretty straight. Fellow BT'er Irunfit also had the swim at 1.2 mile on her Garmin. I guess we both swam long. Due to some pretty good wind out of the southwest, there were some waves and chop for us to swim through. I was convinced I had a solid swim and was hoping for sub-28, so I was surprised a bit by my time. However, I am not disappointed in this time bc we all swam through the same conditions. What would you do differently?: Not much. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit stuck on heels a bit. Was happy to see only a small handful of bikes were gone when I got to T1, which led me to believe I had a very good swim. Tried to move a little quicker than normal in transition and it seemed to pay off. I am fairly happy with my time here. What would you do differently?: Get out of the damn wetsuit more smoothly & not expend so much energy wrestling with it. Bike
Comments: They revised this course since I last did the race in 2011 & I like most everything about it except the newly added turnaround on the western portion of the route. Just not a big fan tight turnarounds on any bike. It doesn't bother me because I am comfortable with my bike skills, but it does add some unneeded stress when I see a bunch of people of all cycling levels congregating in that area. I got through okay, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some accidents in that area. Some of the course was pretty tough going into the wind where I looked at my computer and saw some pretty slow speeds. Then in other areas I found myself going 25-30 mph with less effort. This was my first time using my race wheels in a race and also the first time I have ever used a rear disc. Even with the strong winds, I never had any issues with control of my bike and, as it turns out, I felt like the disc was a great choice. Overall. I put forth a solid effort on the bike and felt like I did not overcook it. I did a good job of drinking through my aero bottle and downed 3/4 of it & ate about 100 calories in the form of half a cliff bar. Also had one salt tablet. I am pretty happy with my pace of just under 22 mph. What would you do differently?: Not much. Transition 2
Comments: No real issues coming into or exiting T2. Fairly smooth. Run
Comments: Running is not my strong suit and running in heat is definitely not my strength. It was very humid and hot at this point and there is no shade on the course. My goal was to run 8 min miles in a cooler temp, but I decided I wasn't going to kill myself on this run and try to hit that goal. I basically adjusted to what felt comfortable in that heat. I think I had more in the tank and definitely could have run faster, but I wanted to keep consistent and not kill myself as this is not my A race of the year. So my run was not stellar, but it wasn't a complete disgrace. I saw a lot of people walking and was glad I kept it comfortably hard which put me right in the middle of my age group. I'm happy with that. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Rest. Got to meet mr2tony at the finish line & he removed my chip. He seemed to be volunteering all of the place........Thanks Tony! Met up with Colleen & found a nice shaded area where I had some Gatorade, water and a few bananas. Unfortunately the ginormous cookies that looked so delish were all gone by the time I got to the food area. That was the only bummer for me on this fine day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nuthin except that I purposely held back a bit on the run. Event comments: Great race, great facility and always very well run. Only suggestion was their post-race food items were very limited with only bagels and bananas. Could have used a little bit more variety. However, IMO there is no doubt that this race is one of the better races in Wisconsin. Last updated: 2013-03-21 12:00 AM

Alarm set for 3:15, but for some strange reason I woke up naturally at 3am. That gave me about 5 hours of sleep. The good news is that they were quality hours of sleep because I took Nyquil that night to insure it. Brewed up some coffee at 3am, had a bagel & Greek yogurt and Colleen and I were off at about 3:40.
At 3:40am, one does not typically plan for traffic or other types of road delays, but we found all of them. We were forced to avoid the 794 bypass because the freeway was closed at Cleveland. Instead we decided to drive through downtown Milwaukee where we discovered the ramp from I94 EB to to I43 SB was closed. We ended up going out of our way by taking the Lake Park Freeway and coming up alongside the airport and getting back on I94 via Layton. Nothing like a grand tour of downtown Milwaukee and the airport at that hour of the day.
The good news is it only delayed up about 15 minutes.
Zero. Ironically it was a bit chilly before the sun came up.
