Swim
Comments: The start consisted of each wave wading in the water and starting from there. We were all able to spread out some but it was still a bunch of confusion and bumping in to women to start with. But I had a decent time coming out of the water, I even passed a few guys who were stragglers. I was out of the water at 13 minutes, does that include the time started when the guys first started....2 or 3 minutes before me? What would you do differently?: Try to get in a good groove earlier. I couldn't really get in a decent rythym (how do you spell that word??) and I felt out of breath. Bilateral breathing worked well so I could see everyone on both sides and the buoys. Transition 1
Comments: I had a great transition. I wish I had a split time. I'm glad I had practiced because I felt comfortable and I knew what I needed to do to get out on the bike. There was a guy a couple bikes down from me who'd come in before me and was still there when I left. I felt like I gained some "free" time. What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went great. Bike
Comments: It seemed I got passed by EVERYBODY! There were 40 and 50 yr. old women who were passing me like I was standing still. I knew the bike segment was my weakest part. That was the furthest distance I've gone on a bike at one time. Not the best race strategy. My new road bike definitely made a difference, if for nothing else then to feel better coming off the bike to run. I can't imagine how hard it would have been or how long it would have taken me on my heavy, knobby-tired mountain bike. I also got "hot foot." I don't know what to do about that but I'm definitely going to check in to it. My next race is 3 miles longer and I don't want to get that again. What would you do differently?: Definitely train on my road bike more. My bike won't be "new" anymore so that's not an issue. I just need to ride more and get used to the ride and the distance. I think I passed maybe 3 people on the entire ride. There were even 9 yr. old boys passing me. Transition 2
Comments: Another great transition. I was riding in my running shoes so all I had to do was rack my bike, take off my helmet and throw on my running hat. What would you do differently?: Nothing, went great. Except I wouldn't fall getting out of my pedals. So embarressing. Run
Comments: This was an easy run. I had no problems making the transition from bike to run but that probably has something to do with how slow I was riding. My run was very slow but I did pass a few people who were walking. Two miles is almost too short to get in a good rythym (there's that word again!) but I did run 99% of the distance. What would you do differently?: Wear a watch. I had no idea how long I'd been running so I didn't know approximately how far I'd gone. I held back on the run because I didn't want to run out of gas and I really wanted to run the entire distance. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, got some water, a banana and a granola bar. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough training on the bike. I've only been "training" for a triathlon since the beginning of May so overall I'm happy with my performance. I was able to do the distance and not feel exhausted at the end. I actually felt pretty good but next time I won't hold back as much. It was my first race and a great leaning experience. Now I know I can do it! Event comments: This is a great race for beginners! The course is well marked and it's not too hard. It's pretty flat so it's easier for the bike and the run. The only thing I'd like better is if they had chip timers. I'd like to know my exact splits. I only have my bike time from my computer on my bike. Last updated: 2006-06-18 12:00 AM

Took a quick shower, drank some water and I ate a bowl of oatmeal at the hotel when I got up. Ate about 5:00 so I'd plenty of time between eating and the race start. Got my stuff, my sister, and my bike and we loaded up the car for drive to the race. We got there about 6:15 so when I got to the transiton area there was still plenty of bike space. It was a first-come basis so I wanted to get there really early.
Not as much as I should have. My stomach was doing flips so I didn't do what I should have. Warmup pretty much consisted of walking around before the pre-race meeting and then 5-10 minutes of swimming to warm up before the start.
