Swim
Comments: This OWS was much easier then the first sprint OWS I did a few weeks ago - practice paid off. While I was not setting any world records I felt strong and did the crawl about 95% of the time. My sighting is getting better and my level of comfort within a crowd is also better. Now I need to focus on form and speed as I know I can do better then 34 minutes. What would you do differently?: Noting but practice, maybe now that I am more comfortable I should start more with the big group as I waited a bit in the back before I begin. Transition 1
Comments: Was an easy transition. Just was enjoying myself and tried to hurry every chance I got. What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: I had two flats.... I got about 2/3 the way though this segment feeling confident and passing lots more then the folks that past me. I thought for sure that this was going to be my strong event and then the first flat happened. Now I am new to the sport and I had new tires and I was doing a short distance so I did not have any spare stuff....Big mistake. I waited there for a bit and once I realized that there was not going to be a quick van to help I took off the shoes and started to walk. I must have walked about two miles when Brian came in to help. He was from the event staff and between him and I we replaced the tube in the back wheel. We were both new at changing tubes so it did take us a bit and off I went.....I made it a few miles down the road when it blew again (must have pinched the tube or something was in the actual tire). So took off the shoes again and placed bike on the shoulder and start walking...I now need a new paid of socks. What would you do differently?: Lots. Since the race I have replaced the tire, purchased a toolkit for my bike including tubes, Co2 and tools. I have also taken a class on changing out tubes so I am all set for next time. While I was not a happy camper out on the course (especially after the 2nd flat) I now look back and appreciate the learning experience as next time I will know what to do. Transition 2
Comments: Not much to say as the bike was not rolling so I carried it into the transition area and put my running shoes on (at least I did not have to remove the bike shoes as they were in my hands) Run
Comments: I was training for a 9:00 minute pace but after the bike troubles I did not have the heart to push it - plus that hill at the start was a killer. My focus was on finishing the race. As I was near the end of the running segment I did get lots of good encouragement from runners that were heading back into the finish area. Good to hear the words. What would you do differently?: Not much given the situation. Post race
Warm down: Just talked to people at the finish line and just cooled down. It was nice to chat with people as they were extremely friendly. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hill, Heat, and flat tire. Event comments: I enjoyed the race and I thought that the event staff did a good job. I was impressed. Alarm went off at 5:00 am as I wanted to be in the transition area by 6:00 am. Had some breakfast of Starbucks protein box (hardboiled egg, west bread with some peanut butter, and fruit). I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is on top of the hill above the race start. Traffic got real bad on the main road due to the race so next time I will try to stay at the Hampton Inn which is next to the transition area.
This was my first Olympic event and only my 2nd Triathlon. I did real bad on the first open water a few weeks back so I trained hard to get better in that space so I was ready to get wet. Warm up included some stretching and jogging. I got there a bit too early as not much to do and laying out my transition area did not take long. You get your own rack, tray and bench in your transition spot so that was real nice.
