Total Time = 1h 26m 15s
Overall Rank = 68/113
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 7/9
Pre-race routine:

Had my normal smoothie and coffee for breakfast, got to the race site about an hour prior to the start, setup transition and walked around a bit.
Event warmup:

None. Mistake number 1.
Swim
  • 13m 1s
  • 400 meters
  • 03m 15s / 100 meters
Comments:

I don't know if it was from training in a 25 yard pool and racing in a 50 meter pool or wearing a compression tri top on race day but this was the worst swim I have ever had. Inhaled water at about 140 meters and never recovered. Could not breathe correctly after that even doing sidestroke. I hyperventilated the rest of the way. My first 100 meters felt good but that did not last. I swam 450 yards Thursday before the race in under 10 minutes and felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a 50 meter warm-up and get in better swim shape.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Long run from the pool to the bike. T1 started at the pool exit. I took the extra few seconds in T1 to put on a windbreaker and was glad I did. 58 degrees on a bike and wet would have been cold.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transition more.
Bike
  • 41m 32s
  • 14.44 miles
  • 20.86 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt ok on the bike after a few miles. Finally got my breathing regulated after inhaling water on the swim. I would like to see traffic closed at the Turner Center where bikes come in and out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

I felt pretty good about T2. I got my running shoes on quickly, grabbed a GU and my water bottle and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Practice.
Run
  • 26m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I was running slower than 10 minute miles and was surprised to see I had run an 8:40 pace. I think I put more into the bike leg than I realized.
What would you do differently?:

Train better by doing several bricks leading up to race day. I had done none.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a banana and drank water. Walked around a bit to stay loose.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swim training and no brick workouts prior to the race.

Event comments:

This was my 2nd tri ever but I expected to do better. If I can get to be at least a middle of the pack swimmer, I can be competitive in my age group. I am determined to get faster.
