Swim
Comments: I was surprisingly calm during the whole swim. Didn't really panic. I was hit several times which I have grown accustomed to in OWS triathlons. I could definitely still work on sighting, in the first 300meters I veered completely left and had to work my way back to the pack/buoy. I'm pleased that I didn't panic as this is my longer OWS distance yet. I also didn't get to practice in my wetsuit before this race since water temps have been cold. All training has been done indoors. What would you do differently?: Definitely sight better, could have started off stronger as well. Transition 1
Comments: the wetsuit "strippers" couldn't get my suit off in one fluid motion. got stuck in my heels so lost some time there. What would you do differently?: get wetsuit off quicker. the run from the bayou to transition was also pretty long so definitely need to run faster! :) Bike
Comments: on the way out, wind wasn't bad at all, and quite cool. I was hoping only for a conservative 17.5mph avg to save my legs for the run, but i feel so good that I biked harder. felt good until mile 45 then started to have stomach cramps. on the way back, winds picked up. What would you do differently?: need to drink more. has 2 21oz worth of nutrition (around 400 calories total) in my speedfill. i think i only drank 1 bottle's worth. ate almost all my solid food which was a mix of Powerbar gels and Bonk gels. Should have drank more so I was out there for almost 3 hours. Transition 2
Comments: Took too long - i missed my rack and had to look for it for some time. lost time there. also fiddled w/ my garmin - should have done while i was running! What would you do differently?: remember my rack and fiddle with the garmin while running. also probably slather sunscreen or more of it at the start since i got sunburned pretty bad. Run
Comments: HOT! did not expect this much heat. i've been training in cool weather given the early race, so not used to this. also, i believe i was dehydrated from the bike since i didnt drink enough during that leg. so come mile 4, i hit a wall and just had a hard time lifting my legs. took 1 hammer gel and 1 electrolyte pill. stopped on all stations and took 1 bathroom break. What would you do differently?: train in the heat more; hydrate properly and not stop too much along the stations. should have popped a few more electrolyte pills as well. Post race
Warm down: 3 slices of pepperoni pizza, lots of water. also took my recovery shake. What limited your ability to perform faster: the heat, lack of hydration, stomach cramps Event comments: my 1st IM 70.3 and i definitely was pleased that i broke 6 hours in my first attempt at this distance! took away a lot of learnings and hope to apply them on my next IM 70.3 which is in Cebu.
