Pre-race routine:

The day before race I attended MultiSport Expo & Packet Pick-up. It was very informative to me as a first time contender to take part in Course Talks, Transition Clinic, and presentations. Also having the opportunity to rack a bike and make body markings at the same time, would save me some time at day race. Just looking around and mapping out the transition area, swim in/out, bike out/in helped me a lot to be well organized and prepared for the race.
Event warmup:

15 min swim before transition area was closed at 6:15am. Light jogging and stretching before my wave start time at 7:48am.
Swim
  • 22m 3s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I only collided twice with other swimmers lost in direction. In the return loop, rising sun was an obstacle for me since I take breath on one side only. Anyway, I am not ready to continuously swim free style in open water. Most of the distance was breast stroke.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely work on my swimming technique, swim more of the distance with free style, improve open water swim in general.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

Despite having my gear organized well and mapping out transition area before the event, I spent too much time on T1. It was slow to put my shirt on still wet upper body and having a pedal of my bike positioned against the stand of the rack.
What would you do differently?:

Dry with a towel not only my feet but upper body as well. Make sure the bike is easy to take of the rack and there are no obstacles on the way. I will probably not need bike gloves for sprint distance - putting them on is a waste of time. I also could have water bottle installed on the bike already and hydrate while riding - not at T1.
Bike
  • 40m 21s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.34 mile/hr
Comments:

I was very satisfied with my ride. Felt good and strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I had my running shoes on already. No problems with racking the bike back on. Overall good transition to my advantage since my bike racking spot was close to "bike out" and "run out".
What would you do differently?:

Grab my hat, belt with number, and run instead of putting them on next to bike.
Run
  • 26m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

The temperature and humidity started to kick in as the sun was rising up. I was glad to take a water drink at "run out" and 1.5 mile mark. Overall I was satisfied with the run and the result.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Hydration, walking down the lake shore, and some stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swimming workouts, open swim practice, and lack of proper swimming technique. Need to practice transitions more. Water bottle or two should be on the bike.

Event comments:

I liked this race very much not only because it was my first sprint triathlon ever, but the organization and atmosphere as well. The weather and water temperature cooperated to make it an awesome event. I got my closest family cheering up on all parts of the course and it helped a lot to get very good overall result. I definitely will do it again next year and recommend it to others.
