Pre-race routine:

Getting to the starting line for the 6:30 start is the main objective. Have to catch a bus from near the finish around 5:00. Got to the start area about 6:00 and the 1st order of business was to get myself and two first-time runners to port-a-johns. Long lines and not any other options for #2. Satisfied with breakfast, but maybe should have drank more "just water".
Event warmup:

Normally I like to do some warm-up ending with some strides, but the bathroom chore was more important and took up all the time.

  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

felt I would have liked to be a little stronger, but hard to tell if the weather was the factor
What would you do differently?:

Would have liked to get a warmup in ahead of time. Maybe had better sleep going into the race. Drank a little more water before the race
Post race
Warm down:

continued to walk, drink lots of water and sports drink and some light stretching. Able to get a quick message as they weren't too busy

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I like to think that I have a good ability to quickly gage my current fitness level and recognize and run at threshold pace. Therefore other than different weather which I can't control, Nothing except my fitness level.

Performance: Good
Mile 1 - 7:40 went out just a tad over EZ. This was basically my warmup Mile 2 - 7:28 this was my goal pace, but I felt I was working harder than I should be. Mile 3 - 7:28 Ditto #2 Mile 4 - 7:41 Cut back drank alot of water and Ultima at the stop Mile 5 - 7:44 Continued to work in a more comfortable zone. Mile 6 - 7:11 Benefiting from a downhill section and a nice grove on the tunes. Mile 7 - 7:37 There's mile 20 on the marathon course. Six to go and I am running the end of the marathon at split times I haven't seen for ten years! Mile 8 - 7:41 Yes it's hot and I'm tired, but I need to step it up to break 1:40. Going over is NOT an option. Mile 9 - 7:33 Up and over lemon drop. I really love that hill. Mile 10 -7:27 It's mostly downhill from here. Mile 11 - 7:29 The crowd is thicker now, but the sun is out fully now and it's getting real muggy. Mile 12 - 7:28 I am smelling the barn and I am getting exicited. Mile 13 - 7:09 Nothing is getting in my way now. I CAN maintain this effort. Hey, I haven't been thinking at all about my back/hip today ! Mile 13.1 yeah, done. Cheated death again!
Course: fairly flat with a few gentle rolls. Very familar territory for me, due to having run 10 previous full marathons.
