Swim
Comments: I was in the 4th wave and I was so cold I was shivering waiting for my wave to go off. Once I got in the water I warmed up immediately. I stayed on the outside and got off course several times and ended up swimming probably considerably more than 1.2mi. Last 400 yards my right calf and quad cramped up on me. I just tried to dorsiflex my right foot hoping this would help. It stayed cramped up until I got my feet on the ground. Never felt like I got in a good groove and was expecting a worse time than last year. I was surprised when my watch said 45min. 2012: 49:50 2013: 45:33 What would you do differently?: Swim more. Transition 1
Comments: Used wetsuit stripper. Once wetsuit was off the stripper had to help me up because my right leg started cramping again. Hit the port a potty before getting on the bike. I put bike shoes on in T1 due to foot injury. I didn't want to run through T1 barefoot. 2012: 5:05 2013: 3:59 Bike
Comments: Small hill about 20 yards long right at beginning. I ran my bike up the hill and mounted on top of hill. My goal was to avg 20mph and keep HR at or below 150bmp. Had trouble getting my HR under control for the first 20min. After 20min I kept my HR in goal range. Over the first 30 miles I was averaging 20.1mph so I was feeling great about my time. I went into the 30 mile aid station and I needed to get a bottle of water. I took the bottle hand off went through the aid station and started to pick up speed. I went to put water bottle in cage when the wet bottle slipped out of my hand. I tried to catch the bottle and lost control of the bike and hit pretty hard on my left side. I laid there for a minute trying to assess damage done when a volunteer ran up from aid station and helped me up. I saw blood over my arm and leg but I didn't feel to bad so I gave the bike a once over it looked fine so I decided to take off. As soon as I got on the bike I realized my front tire was flat. I was still a little disoriented from the crash so I accidently took off rear wheel instead of front. I quickly realized my mistake and put it back on and took off the front. While I was fixing the flat the volunteer ran back to aid station and got me water for the rest of my ride. The volunteers at Redman are awesome! The crash happened at 1:28:34 into my ride and I was back on the road at 1:38:57. So I lost 10:27. When I got back on the bike my elbow and hip was hurting pretty bad. My elbow pad on the bike was soaked in blood from resting my elbow on it. My hip hurt but didn't seem to bother my biking any. I avg 20mph the rest of the ride. 2012: 3:00:33 2013: 2:55:31 Average HR 145bmp What would you do differently?: Not crash Transition 2
Comments: Went pretty smoothly. Was going to go to bathroom but all stalls were being used so decided to hold it for run. 2012: 2:02 2013: 2:42 What would you do differently?: Lost time trying to find open port a potty. Run
Comments: At the start of the run I felt pretty good. 1st mile 7:34 pace 2nd mile 7:45 pace. After mile 2 hip that I injured in crash really started hurting. I though I was going to be forced to walk the rest of the run. I just kept telling myself make it to the next aid station and see how it feels. I did this pretty much to mile 10 then I told myself only a 5k left HTFU. Also, at mile 10 I passed a man and he noticed the blood on me and said "bike wreck". I answered "yes". He then said "great spirit" It really motivated me to finish strong. Ended up running entire race except for a couple of steps through several aid stations to get a drink. 2012: 2:02:12 2013: 1:47:57 Average HR: 151 Post race
Warm down: Went to medical tent to get wounds cleaned and patched up. Event comments: Awesome race! Great race director and volunteers. Last updated: 2013-04-12 12:00 AM

I woke up at 3:30 to start moving around and eat breakfast. Had a small cup of coffee, Cliffbar, and banana for breakfast. Left hotel around 4:50 and got to race site around 5am to set up transition.
Set up transition. Was freezing waiting for race to start. Phone said it was 52 degrees.
