Swim
Comments: I hit the freezing water, took a big gulp of water and did a dog paddle, walk, swim to survive as I could not take a full breath, put my head in the water or expel the water I swallowed. What would you do differently?: Wear a wet suit, get in more swim practice and calculate the depth of the pool. Also I would wear some throw away sweats and sandals to keep warm at the start. Transition 1
Comments: I couldn't feel my feet, so I had trouble getting up the hill to t1 and putting on my shoes. Spent a few extra minutes trying to expel the water swallowed in the pool (to no avail). What would you do differently?: Be a lot changing out and get a racing belt. Run
Comments: Finally expelled the pool water 2 miles in. I couldn't pick up the pace due to my quads cramping. What would you do differently?: Be in better running shape (more rested) Post race
Warm down: Walked a mile, light stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Completely exhausted from playing and refereeing soccer, doing double workouts and working doubles at a new job. Event comments: I can't give a fair assessment on the race due to inclement weather. A fair share of athletes and volunteers were absent. I had a blast (besides for the pool incident), everyone was very helpful to the lost newbie. It was a good experience and I will be back next year better prepared. I just hope the weather is better. Ate grits and turkey sausage 2 hours prior, arrived 45 minutes before the start. The bike leg was canceled due to two days of flooding.
Running in place, calisthenics, light stretching. Negated by the hour wait before our time group hit the freezing water.
