Swim
Comments: I think the current gave about 2 mins of free speed to my 1500. I was still passing people left and right, so I felt like I was having a solid swim. I've been working on my swim a lot this offseason, so I'm pretty happy with how it's progressed. What would you do differently?: Keep improving. I'm still giving up time to the fast guys. If I want to fight for the podium, then I have to close in at every discipline. Transition 1
Comments: We had to do a run up a set of stairs, up a ramp, up yet another set of stairs before we got to T1 to do the normal stuff. This made for a lengthy transition. What would you do differently?: I jogged pretty decently getting to the bike, but I need more sense of urgency getting to the rack. I gave first in my age group probably 20 free seconds with my T1 alone. Bike
Comments: The bike had some shifty wind out there, but it was manageable overall. I think I left some speed on the table here, but it was my first race of the season, and I wanted to make sure I had a run in me. What would you do differently?: More threshold work outdoors. I've been killing it on the trainer, but I need more riding with hills and different road surfaces to get ready for racing in reality. Transition 2
Comments: Slowest T2 in my Age group. Fastest being 51 seconds. I suck. What would you do differently?: I need to do some practicing it seems. Run
Comments: Took about 2.5 miles to get my legs under me. I definitely need to focus on my run some before Memphis in May. What would you do differently?: I need to do some fast brick runs off the bike. There's no reason why I shouldn't be closer to my open 10K time. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm still in a training mode. This race was a test to see where I am heading into Memphis in May. I think I'm in a good position, but I'm not where I want to be yet. I have two weeks of solid training to prepare for it. Event comments: The race was really cool with the Escape From Alcatraz style entrance, and the rest of the race was organized very well. I'm glad I picked this race for my opener. Got up at 5 to get ready for the 8:30 race. Didn't do anything fancy here. I just had two cups of coffee and some oatmeal.
Because of the current of the Alabama River, where the swim was held, the swim was modified to a point to point race, with a riverboat taking us 1500m upstream. Because of that, my warmup was kept to a minimum, since we were going to be sitting on the boat for a while before the race started.
