Swim
Comments: Swim went well, started in the middle of the group. Had a great entry, the group split and I got fresh water pretty early. About half way to the bouy we started hitting the wave in front of us. My sighting was great, I hit the bout right as planned. Made the two turns without incident. Ran into some kelp and grass half with into the finish but it did not effect my breathing or stroke. Pretty happy with my swim. What would you do differently?: Start at the front. This is only my third race, and I have been in the top 10 of the swim in all 3 races. I need to swim a little harder on these sprints. Transition 1
Comments: Ran to my bike, suit off in a hurry. Then I sit down to put socks and shoes on. Helmet and glasses. Sprint out to mount line. Flying leap onto bike and off we go. What would you do differently?: I think I need different bike shoes to be able to go sock-less and keep the shoes clipped into the pedals. My shoes are mnt bike spd shoes with 3 straps. So with some different shoes and practice I think I can shave off some time. Bike
Comments: Within the first 4 minutes I dropped one of my two water bottles. I instantly decided not to stop and lose the time. So I motored on with only one bottle that was about half full. BUMMER. I was already pretty parched from the salty swim. I felt like I pedeled hard. I stayed in my "aero" postiion the whole race. Although on a road bike, and being 205 lbs, Aero is all relative. Anyway, I am VERY new to road biking but I felt like I pushed this as hard as possible. I tried to keep above a 19mph avg pace. overall I am pretty happy with the ride. I only was passed by some serious dudes on some fancy bikes. What would you do differently?: Need a tri bike that is fit properly. Keep training hard and riding the hills. Transition 2
Comments: Hit the dismount pretty well. Jumped off into a good jog. It helps to still have your shoes on!!! I took my helmet off mid way down the aisle and racked the bike no problem. Shoes off, new shoes on, visor on. Quick drink on H2O and off we go. What would you do differently?: Maybe get some quick slides on shoes instead of laces. Run
Comments: Well, after what was a pretty hard push on the bike my legs were pretty heavy. What surprised me was that by the time I looked up we were already at mile 1. I got passed by two little guys, remember I'm 6'3" 205 so little is relative which caused me to speed up a little. By mile 1.5 I had some serious cotton mouth, and the stickiness from the gel I ate on the bike was like superglue. I hit the second water station and immediately inhaled the water which caused a violent cough. NOT FUN. Once the cough went away I decided to pick it up and I saw a big guy several hundred yards ahead and made it a goal to catch him. Which I did as we entered back into the park area by the expo. When I saw the 26min I was bummed. I am capable of a sub 21 on fresh legs. But it was great to cross the line and have family cheering for you. What would you do differently?: Run faster!!!! Train more bricks, hard rides to sprints. Bike hills to long runs. Bike sprints to hill runs. Post race
Warm down: Water!!!!!! Food, chase my two year old around. Burger, fries, beer. I normally eat a paleo diet so I was excited about my post race cheat meal. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall I am very happy with my effort. I am very new to the sport, have had some success at the little races that I have entered, and I look forward to learning more about the sport, and seeing what more focused training will do for me. This new sport has been great for me and I look forward to a lot more to come. Event comments: Fun event, it was great to see the pros. I really like racing in mission bay!!! I will go again next year, but will be doing the Olympic. Last updated: 2013-04-25 12:00 AM

Wake up 5am, Eat three eggs, sweet potatoes, and a banana. Grab gear and head out the door.
Got there very early, maybe too early. Rode the bus from parking into the event. I was nervous about how crowded this would be, but it was very organized and easy to get from drop off to transition. Bike was racked the night before, which was super convenient.
I walked around transition, set up my gear, checked out the para triathlete transition area. Those amazing people got me all jacked up and inspired. What a great event and sport for challenged athletes.
Anyway, I stretched, at a gel with some caffeine in it. I dont normally eat caffeine, so a little jolt before a race is a nice kick start. Did some entries into he water, swam a few 100's, finalized my sighting plan and was ready to go.
