Swim
Comments: I knew the swim was going to be fast, but with them having to change the course, I knew it would be even faster. I kinda tried to line up near the front, but with the way things were oriented, it was hard to do. I didn't really try to sprint out at the start, but I went a little faster than my regular pace, and then just settled in and worked on sighting where to go next as the course had a lot of turns. I overshot one turn, and then I got way off course coming back in and ended up swimming into a bunch of the outbound traffic. Fortunately, we all avoided each other and there were no collisions. I got myself back to my side of the channel as quickly as I could, made the last turn and did my best to swim directly to the exit barge. I missed getting my feet on the ladder on the first attempt and took a much slower and more deliberate second attempt. That ladder could really use another lower rung on it. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/353351126 What would you do differently?: Sight better, swim straighter. Transition 1
Comments: I'm kinda not sure where the time went. I have REALLY got to start working on my transitions. I'm giving away a lot of time here. Dan got to transition after me and left easily 30 seconds before... I have things to learn, yet. What would you do differently?: Go faster! Bike
Comments: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/353351142 The hills (bridge) ate me up, and I gave away a lot of time there, I think. Aside from that, I think that I handled the course fairly well. I hammered the downhills, spent a lot of time in 50x11, and took the turn-arounds quickly, getting back up to speed rapidly. The hills really exposed my lack of training, however, and I got progressively slower on each lap. The course is fun, but the road conditions are absolutely awful. What would you do differently?: I haven't done more than two bike workouts since March, so training might be a good start. In any case, I have got to get stronger on hills if I'm going to get better. Transition 2
Comments: The downhill road to transition was completely torn up, so I didn't risk unbalancing to pull my feet out of my shoes and instead just unclipped and ran in the shoes back to the rack. Racked the bike, changed shoes, dropped the helmet and took a few extra seconds to take a couple of shots of water from my water bottle and ran on out... What would you do differently?: Remember to bring my smaller handheld bottle to the race to take with me on the run vs. stopping in transition to takes swigs from a bike bottle. Run
Comments: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/353351151 The run out of T2 was uphill for about the first .2 miles and then a short downhill on an on-ramp; I used the Garmin to deliberately hold me back until I made the turn and got to the bottom of the on-ramp and then I just let my legs go however they felt. I kinda just cruised easy for the first four miles and my only real goal for the run was to average 8:00/mi for the race. Around mile 4.5 the legs were getting tired and starting to hurt and there was one last uphill at mile 5. I told myself in my head to just get to the top of it and I could walk, but not before then - a little lie goes a long way. I kept pace and got to the top, turned and started the home stretch. There was just one downhill and a short flat section left. I just tried to push myself to keep up the pace, but I was really kinda going as fast as I could at the time. I was able to open it up and finish strong in the last .2, but it really hurt. I am, quit obviously, giving up a lot of position overall with my weak running. I need to get back to it. What would you do differently?: Not too much. I think that this is right about where I am given my lack of running over the last several weeks or so. Post race
Warm down: Found all of the BT and RWB peeps, chatted, ate post-race food. What limited your ability to perform faster: Effectively no training at all over the last 10-12 weeks. I'm living on residual fitness right now, which is only being preserved because I am racing so often. Event comments: Event didn't start on time, but that was the Coast Guard's fault, not the RD's Last updated: 2013-04-28 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:45am, ate some bread and drank a couple cups of coffee to get things going, loaded up the car, then drove the 10 minutes from home to the event.
As soon as I walked up to transition, I got body marked and was escorted into the transition area to where my wave's racks were located. Glenn (YOGI) and Dan (Du To Tri) were already there. I racked the bike and set up my stuff, then proceeded to get into the port-o-potty line. All male Olympic racers went off in one wave, and we were the second to last of the day, so we had a long wait while the Super Sprint and Sprint racers went ahead of us.
Jumped into the water and swam a quick 100 to make sure that the wetsuit wasn't restricting me at all. Then, just floated about positioning myself waiting for the start.
