Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5 am after getting about 6 hours of sleep, which i thought was good. I had packed all my gear the night before. Ate a pb&j sandwich and an apple with plenty of water. Gathered my things and headed out the door.
Event warmup:

Really not much of a pre-race routine since the bathroom lines were ginormous. I got to the race site about 45 minutes prior to race time. Did some light stretching and jogged a bit before waiting in bathroom lines. Lack of a warmup probably limited my pace for first 3 miles.

Comments:

Really stoked about this run, it was my first half marathon and an event i've cancelled on in previous years; so a lot of pride that I put in the effort to run the race. Given the size of the race (about 33,000 runners) really not too congested out there. Given my lack of warm up; my first 3-4 miles were probably slowed by 1:00 min/mile at least.

Since it was my first race, I didn't want to run out of gas at the end, so my plan was to run at nice aerobic pace until mile 8, and then gradually pick up the pace for remainder. But given my slow start, i chose to pick up pace about :30 - 1:00 per mile at mile 5; plus would get a boost heading into the track around mile 6. This turned out to be a good idea since it didn't affect my breathing and level of effort too much.

Running on the race track was pretty cool, but i was not as impacted as other runners; probably because i'm not into racing that much. But cool to see what the inside of a track and to run down the back straightway. Even managed to quickly do an "up down" to kiss the bricks and keep on moving.

Coming out of the track i had about 2 miles to maintinain until I projected the pain to begin around mile 10. Wow, the pain did kick in for me around mile 10. I had read much before on other posts about the mental aspect with one particular strategy to welcome that "old friend". I tried to embrace that approach. This was also the spot where it was no longer fun to walk the aid stations because it took me off my rhythm. Also, want to throw a shout out to Clif shot bloks that were free on the course at mile 10, vanilla flavor tasted like frosting.

The last 3 miles were painful, especially the last 3/4 mile where you could see the finish line the whole way. Overall, very well run event, with good spectator support with many musical acts at practically each mile.
What would you do differently?:

Try a better warmup and include training on muscualr endurance
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some post race food and walked several blocks to my car. Stretched a few times in between. Had a busy day, so i couldn't nap, but would like to do so next time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Warm up routine next time. Maybe drink more. I never peed on the course and felt sore muscles for last 3 miles. Could not tell if that was cramping or not.

Event comments:

As mentioned, a very well supported race that is extremely popular in midwest. Lots of aid stations and musical acts, much fan support along the way.

Performance:
HR seemed high from the start, perhaps i was nervous. My goal was to start out with HR around 150 which is what i had been training with for awhile, but even in the early miles, couldn't keep it off 160; so i assumed that was a new baseline. Successfully managed HR well for entire race, probably peaked around 180 bpm. Limiter was leg muscular endurance. Sore leg muscles at mile 10, not sure if that was minor cramping
Course: Through the west side of indianapolis which is flat. Lot of good run support for this race, it is the largest HM in America. Also cool to see lots of folks with supportive Boston marathon related shirts on. Also, was special to run around the Indy 500 track which would not be complete without "Kissing the Bricks".
