5150 Triathlon Series

Sunny
Total Time = 3h 03m 48s
Overall Rank = 1919/2404
Age Group = M 45 - 49
Age Group Rank = 193/213
Pre-race routine:

My division was near the beginning last year, while this year I had to wait 1 hour 30 minutes before I started. Waves and wind were terrible before sunrise. Swim Course was shortened to 750 m. Swam a little to warm up. Ate a banana and a breakfast bar.
Swim
  • 17m 57s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

For some reason I panicked at the start. Maybe it was the waves or the tightness of the wetsuit. I could not catch my breath. This was a distance I could do easily OWS previously, but not this day.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a wetsuit for this event....train more OWS
Transition 1
  • 07m 42s
Comments:

T1 was a LONG distance from the adjusted swim course. Felt like a half mile. Ran easily with my wetsuit down to my waist and barefoot. Saw a lot of people struggle to get through the swim and into t1.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes in clips with rubber bands rather than putting them on and running with them.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 15s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.91 km/hr
Comments:

Slower by 1 mph over the distance of the course from last year. Seemed like there was more head wind this year...hard to get to a pace I am used to.
What would you do differently?:

push a little harder on the bike, but careful to leave something for the run.
Transition 2
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

Not a bad t2. Took my time a little to get a drink. Not really concerned about being too quick. Said hello to my family on the way out. Felt pretty good at this point.
What would you do differently?:

No socks...drink/eat in last miles of bike to save time.
Run
  • 1h 14m 53s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I lost it midway through the run. Not enough training? Not enough fluids? need to get more fit? Yes Yes and Yes. Ran through mile 3, then did lots of walking/running. Dissapointed that I stopped.
What would you do differently?:

More endurance training. More fluids. Work on taking off some weight.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice Towels (great gift at the end). Sat for a little. Ate a poptart of all things. Drank some water. Walked around a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness level. Heat. Weight.

Event comments:

Goals for next year...Swim better. Better effort on the bike (20+ mph), run through the whole 10k.
