Run
Comments: Goal was to run as many 10'/miles as possible and see what happens. Treat this as a long run workout and not a race. First mile felt like a 9' effort, but was only a 10' pace. Thought this was a bad sign. Mile 4 included a stop at the porta potties. Walked a couple of aid stations to get water. Mile 6 we headed to the track and I could feel my back tighten just a hair. I've had issues on this course before with my back tightening up later in the race. Took a little Gatorade right before the track. Not sure why I do this. Gatorade does not sit well in my stomach while running, but it was a little more humid than I had planned and I knew I had sweated more than I figured. I didn't carry salt with my as the temps were supposed to stay below 60, so I thought I'd get some electrolytes from the Gatorade. Well it hit my stomach and sat there as usual. And as usual, I continued to take Gatorade whenever it was offered. Not smart. Approaching mile 8 and Pat was still running with me. I knew I was going to have to slow down soon, so told him to quit babysitting me and go on. he finally conceded and took off. I started a 2' jog/1' walk at mile 8 and held that pretty consistently through the finish. What would you do differently?: Far from a PR, but it's nice to know that on minimal training, I can go out and gut through a 1/2 mary. Expectations are much, much higher for the marathon in November. Post race
Warm down: Walked to hotel. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. Event comments: Indy is a top notch race. Excellent all around. I'll be back. Last updated: 2013-05-06 12:00 AM

Planning stages, was supposed to run this race with my wife, Monica. Long winter of medical issues and five trips to Mayo Clinic for her and there was no way she was able to train or run. My training was very sporadic. Couple of 6 mile runs and one 8 mile on the previous Saturday. I thought about transferring my entry, but thought I'd give it a go since I had quite a few team mates running. I transferred Monica's entry to Pat and I rode down there with him, James, and Brett.
We arrived, hit the expo, signed up for the Indy Monumental Marathon in November, got packets, and left. Got a bite to eat and hit the sack fairly early.
Woke early, ate cliff bar and coffee. Debated on what to wear. Temp was 50's and overcast. Ended up with sleeveless shirt with sleeveless bike jersey over top. Wore a throw away sweat shirt to the corals.
No real warm-up, walked to coral Z to see John and wish him luck. Was a strong military presence at every coral and throughout the race.
