Swim
Comments: Started about 10th in pool. Forgot to start watch grrr! Good swim. Bright sunshine 2m before poolside made judging flip turn more fun - wall disappeared just before you started reaching for it ! Set-up for pool swim on this day was great for no passing issues - people in front and behind were very similar pace. Heading out of the pool I got stones all over my feet (not too concerned as I took two pairs of running shoes for that reason !), . There was a 660m run (gps'd it day before) to the transition ! Slipped the shoes on and got going as fast as possible. What would you do differently?: Start my watch !!! I was swearing at myself in the water around the 3rd length !! Transition 1
Comments: Ended up being a good choice leaving shoes off the bike and running in them to mount line....did the same at the end of the bike too...lots of stones on the T1 exit to mount line, would have been hard to get them off my feet whilst trying to pedal. What would you do differently?: Just keep practicing to improve time Bike
Comments: Bike pace felt good. Only passed by 1 person so great for morale. I did get caught up behind para-tandem heading into T2, it wasn't obvious whether they still had another loop or just weren't sure where the T2 entrance was. I didn't want to pass and then cut across in front, so decided to wait it out. No problem though...it is so great to see the teamwork ! Transition 2
Comments: T2 included in run time. Hopped around a bit getting shoes off and running shoes on - legs were a bit like jelly ! Otherwise good - took a quick drink and dextrose tablet. Run
Comments: Legs didnt feel too heavy post bike, got a good cadence going quickly and felt quite settled early on. It was a predominantly grass run, with some parts on a side slope...this made it harder for me to gage stride dist etc. Maybe I could have pushed harder, but not easy to say. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a bit harder throughout the run, but as it was my first tri in 8yrs and only 3rd ever it was not so easy to tell. Post race
Warm down: Finished and met the family. Some gentle walking with the family whilst sharing the bagel and banana ! Had a good drink of water too. Hung around to check out results...surprised to see quite how well I'd done...felt good out there, but surprised myself how hard I'd been able to push on the bike. Being me I was left wondering if I had enough in the tank or any opportunities to make up the 27s to the person in front for an overall podium :-D Maybe next time there is room for a harder push on the run ?! Really happy the training and hard work on weight loss seems to have paid off :-)))) What limited your ability to perform faster: Confidence and race experience of knowing how hard I could push on the run Event comments: A good race to get me back in to triathlons. Only my 3rd ever and first in 8 years. Really happy the training and hard work on weight loss seems to have paid off :-)))) Surprised but proud of the 4th overall and AG win ! Alarm at 5:30, somehow manage to get straight up ?! Look at temperature and see it is 2'c....really want to get back in my nice cosy bed !! Begin to wonder what I can wear over the tri-suit to stay warm enough !
Wake up kids, wife help getting support team ready. pack van. Porridge (oats) & golden syrup (a uk thing; very sweet but goes well with oats), water.
25 min drive to course. Found a good rack spot near bike exit, set up trx...now the sun is out, beginning to warm up and feeling much more comfortable contemplating just the tri-suit !
Got timer chip and wife numbered me up, then walked to pool (saw a pileated woodpecker from 3m away - that combined with the chatter from my two children was great with the pre-race relaxation !
Once by the poolside, watched the tri-a-tri and super-sprint swimmers for a bit. Met a friend from masters swim club and chatted for a while - great as we're similar speed swimmers.
Took a short warm up in dive pool. Was feeling surprisingly relaxed and calm in the lead up to the start.
