Swim
Comments: I have consistently swum about 2000 yards a month for the past couple of months. I knew I wasn't ready, but I was going to give it what I had. Mass start and I somehow ended up in the middle of a washing machine. I usually stick to one side, and I lined up on the right, but soon enough it was ugly. All the way to the second buoy there was slapping, kicking, yada, yada, yada. I was mid pack when we hit the beach, took a couple of minutes off my 440 time. What would you do differently?: Oh I don't know, maybe some training would help. I'm quite pleased with this, it kinda lets me know where I am and it isn't as bad as I feared. Transition 1
Comments: Helmet on first, then socks and shoes which were not too smooth, but it was OK. Glasses and go. Mount was OK, but tri shoes may be beneficial. What would you do differently?: More smooth in there, I was a bit herky jerky with the socks. Bike
Comments: The plan was to hammer and I stuck to plan. I am really trying to get my run to come around this year and I wanted to push myself on the bike to set up my attention to run conditioning and training throughout the year. This proved to work out pretty well. I was passing people right out of T1 and just kept moving forward. I knew this was gonna bite me a bit on the run, but that was my plan anyway. Slipped my feet out of the shoes about .5 from the end, took a hit of honey from the bottle, and did a rolling dismount. Bested my previous race speed by over 1 mph. What would you do differently?: Go harder. I really want to push the bike this year and feel the fatigue going into a run. Transition 2
Comments: Helmet off as I headed to the rack. Bike went on, shoes went on OKish (one slipped) I grabbed the belt and left. What would you do differently?: Smoother would be better, so keep on racing to improve the smooth. Run
Comments: OK, I knew this is where it was going to get tough. It did, but it was all good. We finished with about 200 yards on the beach. SUCKAGE! I hate sand running. However, I think I still beat my previous best by 3 minutes on the run, so I am not unhappy. But this is where I can make the difference in my races. And I can feel it is coming around. What would you do differently?: Be faster ;) Post race
Warm down: Wander around and drink Gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Genetics. Swim training. Event comments: This is the most laid back tri I have ever done. No fence around transition, people wandering around aimlessly, talking and such. There was one timing mat, at the finish, so all times stated herein are approximate. I think this is how the sport felt when it started. I enjoyed myself, raced pretty well, and see where improvements are being made and can be made. I may end up doing more races this season then I originally planned. As with almost every race I've ever done, there was course cutting and drafting going on, but it doesn't concern me. I race my race, clean and within the rules. It always strikes me as ironic that someone is going to spend money on equipment, time on training and then cheat themselves in the end. Dinner the night before with a Leinie's Summer Shandy. Seems like someone is rubbing off on me. Packed everything into the Jeep and the bike on the rack in the garage. Up in the morning at 4:00 am, out the door by 4:15. This is the first race that TW did not come to. Drive was about 1:15, I was one of the earliest there. I have never done this race, and I had issues with my Active account, so I wanted to give myself enough time. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Got set up in Transition on the third rack, all the way to the inside. I had room. I've concluded that I am a minimalist racer. Shoes on a mat, belt on shoes, socks on bike shoes, good to go.
I made my way to the beach, and just swung my arms and legs to get a bit warm. Tested the water, brrrr. I'm such a Floridian! I'll be warm soon enough.
