Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Got a real good nights sleep, and woke up pretty wide awake. I ate 1 pop-tart and drank some water on the drive up. Got everything set up in transition, ran up the first hill and down the road away's for about 5 minutes. Re-checked everything in transition, talked to my parents a bit and then got into my wetsuit and swam for a few minutes.
Swim
  • 12m 28s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim started off fine with everyone going real hard for the first 100 so it was a little hectic but nothing too bad, I only got hit a few times. Once I made it to the first buoy it was a lot more thinned out and I got into a pretty good rythym. There were some little waves coming in and I definitely swallowed some water heading out to the buoy and I was bouncing up and down swimming through them to second buoy. I picked it up a bit after the 2nd buoy and felt good in the water. I was pretty happy to see the time on my watch.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Nothing fancy, just run as fast as I can and rip the suit off and go go go. I put my shoes on in transition because I didn't want to fool with putting on my shoes going up the first hill.
Bike
  • 41m 4s

  • 22.65 mile/hr
Comments:

I wasn't sure where I came out off the water but there were 4 others guys running out to the bike start with me so I wanted to try to sprint up the hill and get away from a few off them. I don't know how but my right foot came unclipped somehow and I hit it hard against the pedal so that was a pain and I got a nice bruise from it. Other than that the bike ride went well, I was able to find a pretty good rhythm pretty early and just rode hard. The pavement was pretty rough in most places so that wasn't too pleasant. I passed a few guys around mile 6 and after that I didn't see anyone else till the very end of the ride. I came into the transition 5th right behind the 4th place guy.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Pretty quick transition, really no complaints
Run
  • 19m 39s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

That first hill is pretty brutal, its not that steep but its a pain right off the bike. I passed a guy in transition but he re-passed me about 0.5 miles into the run. I ran the first mile in 6:40 and started to feel better cause the terrain leveled off. I passed someone at the turnaround point and saw a couple guys running fast that were probably a minute behind me. With a mile left I was just focusing on keeping my strides short and to keep it under control running down that hill and I was able to finish up pretty strong. Not the greatest run but I'll take it.

Awesome Race!! I love this race, the State Park is awesome and Set Up Events do a really great job with this. I'm looking forward to coming back here in September to do the Giant Acorn.
