![]() Run
Comments: Started out running 6:45/mi for the first few miles, and it felt really easy. The wind was really blowing, mostly as a crosswind and occasionally slight tailwind. The first mile or two was pretty cold, but after that it wasn't bad. Things spead out pretty quickly, I think I only passed 3 people all day and got passed by one, so I was mostly running on my own. But the scenery is really nice so I didn't mind at all, and the miles actually clipped along pretty quickly. Around mile 4 I started having my typical hip/glute/hamstring issues, and had to stop to stretch. The next 5 miles or so I was stopping to stretch pretty frequently, but just kept going and didn't really let it get me down. It's frustrating, but there was nothing I could do otherwise at the time. Probably cost me 2 minutes or so though. The last mile I picked it up to try to catch someone about 500 ft. up the road, but ran out of time at the finish. After the race I got really cold right away, so the wife and I headed back to my mother-in-law's and we came back at 2 for the awards ceremony. What would you do differently?: Not too much, pretty solid effort given the current state of my training... ![]() Post race
Warm down: Got in the mother-in-law's hottub for a bit, then stretched some more. Had a nice lunch before the awards... What limited your ability to perform faster: Injury, lack of consistent training. Event comments: Really, really enjoyed the course and hospitality of the locals. Hopefully I'll get to do this race again in the future. Last updated: 2013-05-13 12:00 AM

Finall time for race season! It's been a brutal winter/spring in the upper Midwest, so this is always an exciting time of year. My training over the winter was not great, I pretty much battled injuries and lack of motivation. I did have a good month long block in April where I put down some good training, but reinjured my hip about a week and a half before the race. I was still hoping to do a decent time though. I signed up for this race mainly because it's my wife's hometown and it worked out well for visiting my mother-in-law for mother's day. I tend to like these smaller, low-key events as well. So we drove up Friday and got in around 5 PM, took care of packet pickup, and had dinner with the mother-in-law. It was actually really nice, 65 degrees and sunny. We got to bed early, and up around 6:30 for breakfast. It was cold and the wind was howling. Too bad I only brought shorts, a singlet, and arm warmers. It would be a chilly wait for the start. My wife dropped me at the high school, an buses take you to the start from there. The logistics are handled really well with all that, and we were at the start about 20 minutes beforehand.
Stood around shivering for a bit, then ran about half a mile to get loosened up. I've been having trouble with my hip abductor, adductor, hamstrings, and glute on my right side just getting extremely tight, so I stretched a bit after that. Lined up one row back for the start.
