Comments: I was in wave 7/7. Approximately 15 minutes for the start of 1st wave the wind picked up, generating some waves and the buoys to be blown out of alignment. Saw lots of swimmers having difficulties and bumped into a few others. Got a mouth full of water rounding the 2nd yellow buoy. Goggles had fogged up by this time and with the sun glare, very hard to sight. Still, first out of the water of those in my wave. What would you do differently?: Get a better wetsuit (I'll buy my own). Practice open water swimming. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Don't own a tri-bike or shoes, did the bike leg on my road bike with road shoes. Took a bit longer to get into socks (yes, socks) and shoes. Bike start was uphill, still managed to hop on bike and clip in. What would you do differently?: Get proper tri-shoes, practice flying mounts and biking with socks. Not use the iPhone as my timing device (took 20 seconds to get that going). ![]() Bike
Comments: Surprised to see how many riders I passed, even on tri-bikes. Focused on form and hydration. Worried a bit about drafting penalties - especially when caught in a pack behind the big Suburban, but didn't see too many officials. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, other than getting (or renting) a tri-bike at some point. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: For whatever reason, couldn't find my spot on rack and then when I though I did, it was some else's transition bag that looked just like mine. Lost a minute or so finding my damn spot. Took a while to get in running shoes as well - lock laces were set too tight for entry. Fiddled with iPhone as well. What would you do differently?: As pre-race routine, walk from bike dismount point to transition area. Visualize the turns. Open running shoes for easy entry. Forget about iPhone as time tracking device - did capture run anyway. ![]() Run
Comments: Legs had turned to jello by the time I got of the bike. Got pretty hot too and I really needed a bathroom brake. Decided to keep running anyway. Pace is pretty much my training/race pace, that's a bit of a surprise. What would you do differently?: Need to improve my running. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Got lunch with my wife and 5-year old son (energy bars and water melon for me, pizza for them). Watched the remaining triathletes come in and the award ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall form. Event comments: Great location and very well organized. My wife and son enjoyed it as well - kids activities (bounce house) were a hit. The 2013 Kinetic Sprint was my first triathlon. SATURDAY - Checked in at B&B in the area. Drove up to lake for packet pickup. Attended Q&A session with Race Director. Scouted the bike route. - checked bike and dialed in gears. Went to bed at 11:00. SUNDAY - Arrived at lake 6:50. Parked, got bike and bag of car and went to pickup chip and to body marking. Racked bike and setup transition spot. Walked from entry point of transition area to my bike and then to bike mount/dismount point. Got wetsuit out of the bag with goggles and cap and headed to swim start area. Suited up.
Quick swim to check water temperature and feel of the rental wetsuit. Felt very restricted in shoulders.
