Pre-race routine:

Packed everything the night before. Woke at 4:30 am. Made and ate blueberry pancakes which I had with juice. Harper & I drove to North Park. Got a little turned around in the park and had to ask where the pool was. Not many signs there and GPS was not hepful. Parked at the Devil's Elbow lot so I didn't get stuck there all day once the roads were closed. Went to registration, skipped the long 1-day USAT membership line and got timing chip and got my race number written on the world's cheapest swim cap. Set up transition.
Event warmup:

Ate banana at 7:15. Swam 200M before what I assumed would be 7:30 start time. Ended up having a lengthy prayer for an injured athlete followed by star-spangled banner while we were in the water shivering. Horn went off at 7:36.

4 swimmers per lane, two start at each end of the pool. Lapped the guy who started at my end once and passed the guys who started at the other end twice. Took a fist off of the goggles on one tight pass, but just kept going.
I think I paced this pretty well. Focused on turning over my arms and keeping breathing regular, nice tight streamline off the wall, good breakout.

Subtracted Garmin swim time of 11:20 from chip time of 13:48 to get 2:28 T1 time. This included exiting the pool, a long run around a cone, back to the far end of transition, and the whole length and width of transition to get to my bike which was near the bike / run exit. Dropped my helmet getting it on, but otherwise, this went pretty well. Did a decent flying mount and got one foot on top of a shoe; was able to bring the other one around and get up some momentum. Got into shoes right away and started pedalling after a couple of people who passed me early on.

The data from all of the bike splits is not playing nice, so I didn't figure out my OA placement for the bike.
I tried to keep within myself on the bike after overcooking it at Pittsburgh two weeks ago. Did this by RPE and it seems to have worked pretty well since both bike (1:32) and run (:36) times were faster than last year.
Improved on taking corners this year, particularly the left before the long hill. took it at full speed and maintained momentum to help with the climb.

Comments:

Time is combined with bike leg.
Got out of shoes on final downhill. Brought leg over and had a nice running dismount.
Had a little difficulty racking bike (knocked bike across from me over and had to grab it), got helmet off, grabbed hat (no race numbers) and went.

Was able to get on the heels of a 21-year old runner who was moving at a good pace. Stayed with him until the first time we emerged from the woods and then just hung on to the finish. Managed a bit of a sprint on the last 100 yards or so of pavement.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I thought this was pretty good for the terrain. Was :36 faster than last year.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water.

Event comments:

Still a great low key local race. Lots of familiar faces, great competition.
Happy to continue to improve in time and in OA and AG placement.
I believe placing in the top 10% in my AG at a sanctioned event qualifies me for USAT Age Group Nationals next year.

Garmin time was 11:20. Chip time, which includes exiting the pool, running around a cone (to equalize the two sides of the pool), and the run to T1 was 13:48. Race distance was 700M in LCM pool. Garmin must have still been set for 25M pool and thought it was 350M. Wasn't an option to change in multi-sport mode. Probably have to go to menu for standalone swim and change pool size.

Screwed up my Garmin on this, and the bike ended up in 3 files with the first two having no HR data. There was also a problem with my timing chip which missed two lap times. I came up with this time by subtracting swim, T1, and run times from total chip time so this does include T2.
