Swim
Comments: WOW! I had read how different open water swimming was, and kind of relied on the fact that I have a lot of surfing experience that would get me through. After my disastrous warm-up I decided to do poor mans front crawl, just keeping my head above water the whole time. Played it safe and got there without stopping and followed the shortest route possible. What would you do differently?: I NEED LOTS of open water practice, i can swim good in the pool, but the open water just sent me into some automatic panic. I have to swim double this distance in 4 weeks. Transition 1
Comments: OK - I was pretty winded from the swim, so took it a little easier than I would have liked. No socks, so just straight into my road bike shoes and out and mounted. What would you do differently?: Not be so winded from swim. Bike
Comments: Still winded from the swim, which made the 1st few miles HARD. Still felt bloated/GI Issues. I have 12.9 miles on my garmin, which said my average was a much more believable 19.9mph. 1st 6 miles or so was into a headwind, the way back was nice and I didn't see my speed drop below 20mph, last 2 miles turned even more favorably and was cruising at 24. A little misty rain, but didn't bother me at all. Didn't touch the brakes until the dismount line Transition 2
Comments: Went ok, was fumbling a little with my running shoes which took the time up. Run
Comments: GI issues manifested as a bad under rib cage cramp for most of the run, which was HELL. Never had it this bad before. I just kept a pace that I could mange the pain and not walk. Was aiming for 7:30ish or below a mile. Passed at least two in my age group that started earlier in the time trial start so that kept my spirits up, but really this was just pain management. Post race
Warm down: immediately found some space and put the iced rag they were giving out over my head! What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of open water swim, which in my warm-up scared the shit out of me. Convinced this caused the bloated feeling that lingered throughout the race. BUT - this was my 1st ever tri. This time last year I was not doing exercise. Slowly got into biking and by november had signed up for this tri. Started swimming december and finished in the top 25% of my AG. I am pleased. Event comments: AMAZING race by start2finish events here in the mid-south. It is crazy how organized this company are. LOVE the instant results tent with plasma displays, touch screen terminals to print your race times out on. Good t-shirt, pint glass and poster!! Gave chips out at pre-registration the night before. All I had to do was get my body markings. Last updated: 2013-05-18 12:00 AM

SO... we stayed in the hotel on the race site. After a packed lunch pasta dinner we made to take with us we watched some TV and got to bed early. I woke up a few times, but was generally well rested.
Got up at 5.45 and had a coffee, some OJ, and a half a home-made fruit bread roll with butter and jam.
Got to transition and set up
After transition setup I headed to the swim start to get an idea what this open water swimming was like. This was my 1st tri. AWFUL. I waited till the shock of the water passed and tried to swim like I've done in training, biut the breathing just wasn't happening. I couldn't exhale under water and kept breathing it in. I splashed around and tried and tried to get my swim right, but it just wasn't working.
I think I swam too soon after eating too because I felt so bloated and this stayed with me the whole race. ARRRRGH
