Overall Rank = 5, 1f/37

Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Banana and peanut butter sandwich. Sipped water on the hour drive to the lake.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike around the parking lot a few laps to make sure my gearing was up to par. By the time I organized my transition everyone was headed to the start so I just got in the water and dunked my head a few times. Water was much nicer than expected.
Swim
  • 42m
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first time starting an OWS with men as well as women and the amount of contact surprised me! Even though I started towards the back, I had someone swim over me, punch me in the belly and kick me in the head. Had a tough time getting comfortable. The second lap was definitely more relaxed. Time included a run up the hill to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Get some more OWS practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Took 2 salt caps and a GU plus sip of water.
Bike
  • 2h 50m
  • 56 miles
  • 19.76 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a decent bike. Started out with 24oz GU brew. Ate a stinger waffle at 2 hours. Refilled with water once. Missed the last water stop so ran out of water about 7 miles before the end, but my stomach actually felt overhydrated so no bothers. Dropped my chain on one hill and it cost me a couple minutes putting it back on. Passed about 20 people on bike. Fastest split of women by about four minutes
What would you do differently?:

Put my chain catcher on! And learn how to make u-turns at the turnaround. I went off the road and onto the grass
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Average transition. Took a little longer because I put on sunscreen.
What would you do differently?:

Be more careful putting sunscreen on everywhere- ended up sunburned.
Run
  • 1h 49m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

And now the heat kicks in! Absolutely no shade either, and it made for a lot of carnage out there. Quite a few people switched to the aquabike before they even started the run since it was so hot ( we had a cool spring and not used to the heat). Thankfully, there were aid stations every couple miles. I grabbed a gulp of heed and dumped water over my head at every one. My 1:49 ended up the 3rd fastest run overall (guys) and first of the women. In the last 3 weeks I have now done 2 hard HIM races and a tough hm on the trails, so I was happy with being able to finish fairly strong.
What would you do differently?:

I know I have a lot more speed than this but considering the heat and judging by everyone else's runs, I am happy enough with it.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of fluid and sitting in the shade. Walked back to lake to discover my favorite flip flops had been snatched up, probably by someone partying on the boats. I'm sure they needed them more than someone who had just covered 70.3 miles.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Competing in Rev3 Knoxville 70.3 two weeks ago and not being able to train much in between, mostly because of blisters on my feet. I think I ran like 4 miles since that race. Dropping my chain, and not enough OWS. Still happy- won the women's overall by about 11+ minutes. Small race, but felt good to win!

Event comments:

I really liked this race. Headfirst Performance always puts on a good one.
