Swim
Comments: I only had one open water swim this year and it was around 1500 yards, I was sure I could do the distance but wasn't sure how long it would take. The field spread out pretty quickly and I just did my own thing. Felt pretty good coming out of the water. What would you do differently?: I think I was sighting too often, once I figured this out I would do 10 or more strokes and then sight I felt much better. I also am only training in the pool 2 twice a week. I need to move up to 3+ times. Transition 1
Comments: I really don't know where the time went, I didn't think I was slow but the numbers don't lie. Everything was in place but I guess I need to do some backyard practice. I did have to take my Garmin off before taking the suit off and didn't practice that either. What would you do differently?: probably time myself in the backyard and see how long the change takes. Bike
Comments: Lots of climbing but a really nice ride, if you like lots of climbing. I should have ridden my road bike but this is my 'C' race and I need the time on the tri bike. What would you do differently?: I found a hill that I could do repeats on a couple weeks ago, I wish I found it a couple months ago. As with the swim (and run) I need to just put in more time. I need more practice drinking on the bike, when I was climbing I was gasping for air :-/ When I was descending I was not in a position to drink, there were not a lot of flat sections. Transition 2
Comments: As with T1 I didn't think it took almost 3 minutes, the shoes were ready I racked the bike and felt pretty good. What would you do differently?: We have to drop off the shoes the night before, I would have laid them out a bit better (take the extra socks out of the shoes), etc. Run
Comments: I started out pretty good but I didn't do enough hill work leading up to the event. I had to walk a couple times and that really hurt my time. Living in a pretty flat area where I have to drive to get to hills makes squeezing them in hard. What would you do differently?: More running. More speedwork. I think I spent too much time on building base, however I didn't get hurt this year so maybe I did the right thing. Post race
Warm down: Kissed my wife and walked around so I wouldn't cramp up What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough training. I travel 20+ weeks a year and that really cuts into the biking and swimming workouts. Event comments: they tell you it's going to be hard and it is. I look forward to year. Loaded up the bike and got to T1 at around 6:30, got to get there earlier next year.
This year the water was pretty warm (compared to last year at least) Reports of the water being 72 but I would have thought it was around 68 or so. Did a short swim warmup (mandatory) and started near the back of the pack.
This was my 2nd ever tri with the first one being the sprint race last year.
