Pre-race routine:

Had a cup of coffee and a bagel with peanut butter and jelly at home before leaving for race. I arrived at race about 90 minutes before start. Got body markings and then set up transition spot. Talked with Rick Fesler from Appalachian Running Company for a bit. This was my first ever Tri, so tried to take it all in.
Event warmup:

Went for a short run of about 1/2 mile just to raise the HR a little about 15 minutes before the 1st wave started. I was in wave 6.
Swim
  • 08m 41s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was less hectic than I anticipated probably because I started on the outside and never ran into anyone or was run into. Pretty much had a section of water all to myself for most of the swim. Only found the feet of someone for a little bit.
What would you do differently?:

After the first turn I didn't sight enough and drifted out a little bit, so I'll have to remember to sight a few more times and try to swim straighter.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Staggered a little getting out of water until I got my feet. Took an easy pace up the hill to transition area. Getting the wetsuit off went pretty good but did get a small hangup on my one heel. Helmet on first, then glasses. Socks and shoes on quickly. Ran with bike outside of transition area and had a really good rolling mount. Got shoes clipped in pretty quickly. Overall I was pretty happy with how everything went smoothly here.
What would you do differently?:

I'll pick up my pace going to transition area.
Bike
  • 45m 5s

  • 20.98 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a fun course. I'm glad I rode it prior to the race. I raced this about as well as I thought I could. I did have to brake a couple times for slower riders. Enjoyed the hills and passing lots of riders. Only 1 rider passed me early on, but I was able to pass him before the end.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

This transition went pretty smoothly. Got sneakers on quickly and grabbed visor and race belt and headed out on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Just pick up my pace a little bit.
Run
  • 20m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Took an easier pace until about 1/2 mile in and then took my normal pace. Took a sip of water at beginning and middle from volunteers. With a half mile to go, I picked up my pace and sprinted when I saw the timing area.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder right after the halfway point.
Post race
Warm down:

Once I caught my breath and a volunteer removed my timing chip, I took in my recovery drink and walked around some. Headed over to the tent with watermelon, oranges, bananas, and bagels. Took in some fruit while I cheered on others coming in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. I raced that pretty much like I planned.

Event comments:

Being this was my first ever tri, I feel there could have been several things better. Better communication as some beginners went off in the wrong swim wave. Getting the volunteers ready on the course when the race starts. 2 elite members biking in 1st and 2nd place didn't turn where they should have because a volunteer wasn't ready at that turn(they dnf'd). Don't give out awards until the scoring is correct.
It's a very good race that benefits disabled athletes. I had a great time at my first tri and will always remember it fondly.
