Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 4am. Pumped up tires and loaded bike into the car. Had most everything else already set out, just had to load it. Ate 1 granola bar with PB and a yogurt. Bathroom success! Put PB on the 2nd bar and brought that and a banana out to the car. Kaitlyn arrived at 4:45, Drew woke up and started freaking out, wasn't sure if he'd go back to bed. Oh well. Left the house about 5:00. Ate the granola bar on the way.
Event warmup:

Got ok parking about 3 blocks up on main street, Steve was parked a few cars up. Grabbed our gear and rode bikes down to transition. Got everything set up. Transition closed at 6 but the old lady wave for the Olympic didn't start till 7:15 so lots of time to kill. Went down to the beach w Steve as he swam his warm-up. His wave was around 6;20. Watched him come in from his swim, saw him leave on his bike. Ate my banana around 6:30. Saw Craig and Larry. Hit the metro one more time, then got the wetsuit on and did a little warm-up swim. Got into the chute w my fellow "gray caps" to await the TT start.

Comments:

TT start which was kinda nice--never did that before. Wore my full wetsuit. The air was cool at the race start even tho it was gonna heat up to the 80's. Wanted the buoyancy too. Not a lot of contact, couple of bumps but nothing major. Nice distance. Sun was blinding on the swim in, couldn't tell where the shore even was and the trees blended with the buildings till I got closer to the yellow buoy. Then the sun was high enuf that I could see the exit arch. No issues. Peed halfway.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster. Never did this distance before, felt like a HIM.
Transition 1

Comments:

Got brave and didn't use body glide this time. Ended up with left pinky toe blister, but that could have been because my shoes were wet the entire run. Spent too much time washing off and drying my feet--shouldn't be so picky for a short race like this.
What would you do differently?:

Just dry off feet, not wash them first

Comments:

Only had a couple of sips of water and accidentially took gatorade before mile 15. At 15 took a huge gulp of Gu. Wasn't sure what to do about fueling now, since I normally don't take anything the last 10 miles but there were only 10 miles left! Had another gulp of Gu around mile 20 and drank a fair amount of water as it was so hot out. Carbon Girl passed me on the first loop at mile 5 but she was back in my sight near the end of the first loop. Went back and forth on the second loop--I'd pass on the uphills then she'd pass on the down's--then pulled away last few miles. Made it back to T2 ahead of her.
What would you do differently?:

Just do my own race instead of trying to beat someone else. I think I fried out my legs on the last few hills taking her.
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

My visor strap broke as I was putting it on--ugh! I purposely didn't put sunscreen on my forehead before the race as I knew it would be protected by the helmet and visor. So hot out, I'm gonna be pouring sweat in my eyes. Oh well. Otherwise seemed to be fairly quick. The path of bike in was so long...luckily bike out was right by my rack.
What would you do differently?:

Not have my visor break? I jogged along the outer wall with my bike but once I got into the rack area I walked my bike to my spot. I guess keep jogging...

Comments:

Very hot. Maybe should have taken more water on the bike, was so thirsty on the run. Wish I'd have had my visor. Ice would have been really helpful.
What would you do differently?:

Not fry myself out on the bike. Have a visor. Maybe run up the hills but that's not my MO, esp when it's so hot.
Post race
Warm down:

Had to walk back to transition to get my bike. Walked past my car on Main St and was bummed as my keys were in my bento box on my bike. Did a little bit of stretching, drank a ton of water. Rode my bike back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely the heat, we've not had heat like this yet this year so not acclimated. Lack of knowledge about this distance--not sure how hard to go as it's a shorter race but long enough to need to take in fuel. I messed up my stomach for the run which started me out on a slower pace due to the side pain. Heat kept me running slow. Hills had me walk. Didn't sleep a lot the 2 nights prior so that probably did me no favors either.

Event comments:

It was a good race, liked the course. Post race was nothing like they used to have (huge pancake buffet) but this is a different organization running it. Really nothing at the finish line at all other than bananas, cookies, and water. No party, no result posted. No people either by the time I finished. Wish they would have had ice on the course, and not sure why they start the Oly after the sprint...and then put us old ladies in one of the last waves...

Course: Started run with a side stitch on the left. Ugh! Probably shouldn't have had that second gulp of Gu. Or was it dehydration? I'm so thirsty! First 3 miles are very flat, through an industrial park. No shade, very hot. First station around mile 1-no ice which was a bummer. Took water and wet sponges and dumped water on my head. Continue to a culdesac turn around, pass the same table around mile 2.2. Take more water, dump more on me, and start a Shot Blox. Heat was really getting to me. Side stitch started to fade around mile 2.5. Around mile 3 there was an uphill which I walked. 3.5 ish was another table, took water and dumped it over me, another hill that I walked up to get to the school. More water up by the school, eat a 2nd Shot Blox. More water at table at bottom of hill. Right turn on Main street to WCTC where the finish arch was readily visible. Pushed it through the chute.
