Swim
Comments: Out to the first bouy. The first bouy broke loose sometime after we started. When we got close to the location where the bouy was supposed to be located. The spotter kept yelling "Turn, Turn,..." Finally understood and turned for the next segment. Seemed to have a left to right current which helped the second segment. Swam very relaxed and did not push it at all. It seemed to be over very quickly. I was surprised that my time was not faster. It might be because of the extra distance chasing past the normal turn point of the first bouy. What would you do differently?: Try to increase the stroke rate and swim faster. Transition 1
Comments: Found bike, put on glasses, sweatband, helmet, tried to put on shoes while buckling helmet - didn't work so took a few more seconds to get the shoes on. There was sand where I set up transition, so there was sand in my bike shoes. It did not seem to bother me since we were only riding 15 miles. What would you do differently?: I practiced doing transitions one day for about an hour. I think this helped me keep my focus. I need to make sure I do more practices the week of a race. Bike
Comments: Kept a reasonable speed on the bike. The heart rate averaged 172 which is where I would expect it to be for a sprint. Felt good throughout the ride. Passed a few people and a few people passed me. What would you do differently?: Push slightly harder and continue to train. Transition 2
Comments: Went on the same side as I left from and then turned the bike around to rack it. Silly me, just put it on the rack any which way. Then I took off the helmet and put on my running shoes. I have elastic laces but discovered that I had them too tight for the previous races. This made it easier to put on the shoes and my run was much more comfortable. What would you do differently?: Put the bike on the rack from the other side and then duck under the rack to put on my shoes. Run
Comments: I have leared to smile when I run. It seems to make it more enjoyable. Additionally, not having my shoes so tight improved how my feet felt. I enjoy seeing the other runners coming back and try to shout out there names if I know them. Whenever Mike Kaufman is in the race and we pass each other, he will give me a high five. What would you do differently?: I only have my watch during the run so I guess at my splits. I seemed to be slowing as each mile passed by. I need to work on negative ssplits. Post race
Warm down: Walked, drank two bottles of water and ate a few fig newtons. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not running regularly for the past two months due to ankle issues. Event comments: Other than the lines at packet pick-up and body marking, this race is always a good race. I did not stick around for the awards presentation. Entertainment by the band was good. 4AM alarm went off. Ate banana, two pieces of toast and drank orange juice. Left the house at 5AM. Made it to the race at 6:30. Had to park out on the road. Grabbed the gear and bike - walked to registration. For some reason, there was a line for packet pickup and also a line for body marking. This is the first time, I have seen such a line. Maybe, everyone came at that time. Once I was marked, set up transition and talked to the other people.
Swam enough to get wet and got used to the water temperature. Then waited on the beach for my wave to start.
