Pre-race routine:

Woke up late... I couldn't sleep so I whipped out Lilia's Total Immersion Book and studied up on how to swim... The race in the morning would be my first swim since the 5430 HIM (last july) and I wanted to be READY! My goals: don't drown, don't float on back, take off 15 minutes from last years swim/float. Hey, I read the important parts of the book, I was ready!

By 3 AM I was sleeping like a baby. Alarm went off at 4 but we both slep through it... Somehow I woke up and got Lilia out of bed and we hurried to Loveland.

I made an abbreviated bathroom attempt and failed to produce positive results...

When we got to the bike transition the PA announcer was demanding that everyone clear the bike transition area and head down to the beach... I was stressed.
Event warmup:

No warm up... I arrived to the beach as the first waves were taking off. I struggled to adjust my wetsuit and had difficulty with my timing chip.

Swim
  • 36m 52s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well I almost drowned but I didn't and I did manage to take off about 13 minutes from last years time... But I wish I could have warmed up... if I did I would have been ok. Instead about 200 meters in I totally lost it. I felt like my wet suit was strangling me and I couldn't breathe... I was hyperventilating and looking for a rescue boat... I couldn't get my sh#t together and I was almost afraid... then as I did last year I began to float on my back (last year I floated the entire way...). I new if I didn't get it together and start swimming I was through. At the first bouy I calmed down and started swimming... I found an easy breathing rhythm and adjusted. I actually started to pass people with my colored swim cap... I was ok now. I new I could easily swim the distance... unfortunately I lost a lot of time in my panic. As I passed the last bouy I was amazed by how comfortable I now was and could easily swim much farther... When I hit the beach and checked my watch I was really happy to see that I was out of the water in less than 35 minutes! The run to the transition was no prob and I was way less tired than last year after the swim...
What would you do differently?:

I would have started reading Total Immersion sooner. Also, I would have made a cheat sheet.

Most importantly, I should start swimming once in a while and I definitely will warm up for a few hundred meters prior to the start to be sure that I have my breathing under control... I'm actually looking foward to the Boulder 5430 swim. I think I will do much better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I didn't wear socks and I had trouble sliding into my shoes which were in my pedals
What would you do differently?:

Better pre-race orginization
Bike
  • 1h 36m 33s
  • 32 miles
  • 19.89 mile/hr
Comments:

I wish I didn't lose those 4-5 minutes with the flat... I purchased one new tire the day before and I wish I replaced both tires.

I definitely am a strong climber. I felt great in the hills and enjoyed passing people on the ups. Not having aero bars or a tri bike has many disadvantages - especially on the downhills and in the flats... I felt strong on the bike but my stomach issues were really bothersome.
What would you do differently?:

Wake up early enough to have successful bathroom experience...
Consider putting on aero bars on my road bike...
Be sure to have fresh tires on both wheels
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Had trouble getting my shoes on right... had to take one off and put it back on as my inner-sole was sliding funny because I was not wearing socks... ended up just running with a curled up insole.
What would you do differently?:

Take the time to put my socks on in T-1.
Run
  • 41m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I am sure that I can run an OLY 10K in under 40 minutes... next month in Boulder I am going to do it... This course was poorly marked with the 3rd mile about 600 yards off.
What would you do differently?:

I will start doing more bricks at race pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a bottle of H20 and waited for Lilia.

Had some chow... and later a few beers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

So many things... my lack of swim preperation, poor pre-race orginization, a flat tire, and stomach issues.

Event comments:

Awesome post race munchies!

My AVG MPH was actually higher - I got a flat at mile 30 and had to stop and repair it... I'm usually pretty quick, but in my frenzy I struggled and took nearly 5 minutes to change my tire... That part sucked.

I didn't really drink on the ride and I forgot my goos from the get go... In T-2 I had a fresh gatorade bottle that I intended to run with but forgot that too. I didn't drink on the course but felt ok... The first 3 miles were slowish but after that i started to feel really good with my last mile clocking in at just under 6:20... I felt pretty good but my stomach had a minor side stitch most of the way and I had to really monitor my speed.
Course: Flat - out and back.
