Pre-race routine:

Breakfast around 5:30 - shredded wheat cereal, hard boiled egg, 8 oz. OJ, coffee.
At the race site: Knew it was a hot, muggy day (Ozone alert from 11 a.m. on, and the race was at 9 a.m.), so I had 8 oz of water around 15 mins. before race. Had a chocolate mint GU 15 minutes before start of race.
Event warmup:

As a warmup, we jogged from the subway to registration, about 1/4 mile. Iced my knees for about five minutes. Other than that, it's hard to warm up at a Central Park run. There are a lot of people around. I ran back and forth and jumped up and down to get the heart rate up. I'd like to run about 10 mins. beforehand. My second and third miles tend to be faster than my first.

Comments:

Went out at the speed I wanted - not too fast, which was my mistake last time. First mile was the pace I wanted (7:51) - maybe 5-6 seconds faster. Worked hard for the second and third miles. Every time the road hit a bend, I thought I'd see the three-mile marker. It was a long time coming. Had enough for a kick, so overtook one or two people at the end.
What would you do differently?:

No hat on a sunny, hot day. I wanted it for shade, but I think it kept my head too warm.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of fluids, walked around the grounds. Iced my knees for five minutes. should have stretched more - again, hard to do at Central Park.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More conditioning work.
Heat/humidity/air quality didn't help. (60% humidity, in addition to the 75 degree temperature).

Event comments:

A fund-raiser for people with disabilities, so the run is only one of a couple events. There's also a 3K walk and lots of kid activities like tattoos and face painting. Not a supercompetitive field, but the race is quite well run. Around 2,000 participants this year, but I had no problems getting my race number, t-shirts, etc.
