Comments:

Asphalt & Wet from rain. Many people didn't do the course because of wet roads. They packed up and went home. Race started on a 1/2 mile uphill. Did great jumping on the bike and passed a few people as they fumbled to get on their bikes after the starting mat.
What would you do differently?:

I would have trained for hills. these hills were steep. Next time do a full bike check prior to the race. My back tire pressure was 30 psi low and somehow my seat was about an inch too low, all things discovered on the course. Didn't push myself hard enough as I was a little talkative out on the bike to fellow bikers. Said many "good jobs" to people and complained volcally on the uphills. Next time push harder. This felt more like a training ride to me, but I'm not good at pushing myself. Also next time I'll wear a heart monitor so I know how hard I actually pushed myself. Also a tri bike or better fitting road bike instead of my crossbike might be better. I saw one mtb, 2-3 road bikes and the rest were nearly all tri bikes. I felt I had a huge disadvantage in the aerodynamics division of this race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Thought my legs might give out on me when I jumped off the bike to start running.
What would you do differently?:

need elastic laces on my running shoes! Could have saved some time not having to tie my laces.
Run

Comments:

Sun came out. Got hot and humid. Uncomfortable run. Started on a half mile uphill. UGH! Enjoyed seeing all the professional athletes run the out and back course. They really know how to push themselves. I could hear them breathing. I need to learn to push myself that hard.
What would you do differently?:

I would not have stopped at the water stations, I would have done a slow jog through them to save time. Next time I'll wear a heart monitor so I know how hard I actually pushed myself.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back tire was low on the bike. Haven't practiced hills. Hard to get aero when riding a cross bike. Chain locked up on an uphill. Had to stop, get off, and unlock the chain.

Event comments:

Glad the race wasn't cancelled due to rain, but disappointed that the swim portion couldn't happen. Hills. Lots of hills on the bike. Run mostly flat.
