Total Time = 1h 16m 50s
Overall Rank = 92/240
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 11/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6, took a gel and had some coffee. Drank a Gatorade a about 7AM.
Event warmup:

My warmup was walking down to the transition, swam out to the first sst of breakers and back just to see how rough it was.
Swim
  • 16m 48s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

The "swim" was a joke. I would guess that the waves were about 6-8 feet, strong current. Before the race the option was given to do a duathlon if you did not want to swim. For me the swim was about survival, no form, nothing other than making it to the bouy and then it was not as bad. Coming in I got hammered twice, could not tell which way was up or down. I finally came up for air and got hammered again.
What would you do differently?:

I should have calmed down a bit and remembered that I had done this before, it would be OK. I really let the swim ruin the rest of the race, I really wanted to quit after the first swim!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 32m 28s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 22.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice bike course on fresh paved road, what a pleasure to ride on. Felt like I was having a great bike, apparently I did not.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I should have pushed it harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 27m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

My heart was not in this race, my first run was OK except I kept dry heaving for the first part of it. I guess it was a combination of the seawater that I drank and feeling a bit wobbly.
The second run all I could think about was how much I did not want to do the second swim. I remember thinking that someone surely must have drowned by now so that they would have had to cancell the second swim. I definately slowed by pace down in anticipation of needing every last drop of oxygen to swim.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!
Post race
Warm down:

The post race warm down consisted of puking into the dunes, followed by thank god that's over, I'm never doing that race again!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I really just did not care about how I was doing in the race, I just wanted to finish and for it to be over.

Event comments:

As rough as the water was last year, this year may have been worse. Going into the race I felt like I would be OK givin the fact that I live here and have practiced swimming in rough surf, just not this rough.

Overall: 153/240
Performance: Bad

Course: The buoys blew away a couple of times and then the ropes finally broke, the course consisted of lifeguards holding (trying) the buoys in place. This was a double sprint, supposed to be a 375 yard swim, I would guess the swim was anywhere from 100 to 250 yards as the bouys were a moving target!
