Age Group Rank = 92/103
Pre-race routine:

3 hrs. before-2/3 of a large jar of applesauce, banana, gel 15 minutes before. No coffee
Event warmup:

Dynamic stretches
Swim
  • 49m 38s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Cut in towards a buoy twice thinking it was time to turn but didn't notice that there were more buoys straight ahead and BANG-got run into once and punched in the face once. A boat went by and the wake really threw me for a loop and knocked me off-course.
What would you do differently?:

Look for additional buoys!
Transition 1
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

Much better T1 than last time. Suit off quicker. Still forgot to wear race number on the bike. Ran barefoot and went with the rubber band technique. Rode with feet on top of the shoes for a bit-still need to get better at getting feet into the shoes and strapping the velcro.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practice, practice. Wear race number on ride. Use smaller rubber bands or rig them differently so that they break on their own.
Bike
  • 3h 18m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.94 mile/hr
Comments:

Really nauseous on first loop from the swim. Had to stop when I thought I would puke. Slowed down a little toward the end-felt tired and ready to get off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Shift to lower gears to keep cadence higher.
Transition 2
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

Good solid transition.
What would you do differently?:

Get feet out of shoes quicker. Run faster with bike.
Run
  • 2h 40m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Going great until my knee hurt. Lots of walking, then ran to the next telephone pole, walk to the next telephone pole. That got me to where I could jog most of the last 2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing besides not get hurt
Post race
Warm down:

2 Muscle Milks, walking, light stretching, food, more walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hurt knee, sick on the bike.

Event comments:

Unfortunately I was so slow that the aid stations began running out of cups. The post-race food was just OK. On-course help from volunteers and police was great. Good signage for upcoming turns on bike and run. I wish the swim buoys had been bigger. Pre-race info packet was great, but it would be nice if it included elevation charts. Nice tech shirt, medal, and bike "snack" bag.
