Pre-race routine:

Energy bar and diet coke (my coffee!) 2 hours before, banana 30 minutes before start.
Event warmup:

1/4 mile jog followed by 200 yd swim followed by standing 10 minutes dripping wet with no wetsuit in 55 degree breezy conditions listenting to the RD give a talk.

Race is set up for beginners, low competitive factor. This year they added timing chips as an option, and about 60% signed up. Looking around, there were actually quite a few racers with Tri bikes and they all had timing chips on their ankles, so I'm guessing it was the more experienced folks who opted for the chips. The RD also announced that the bike course had some construction related issues with a no-pass zone on one of the long straightaways and then a course change that knocked a mile off the course. Later found out the swim course measurement was about 15% longer than advertised as well.

The timing was a bit odd, however. They did swim/T1/Bike/Run, omitting T2, so I had to use Garmin data to create a T2 time and modify the run time. Results were given in a non-searchable format, ranked only by overall time. Was able to manually calculate AG and overall but have not broken down SBR by AG.
Swim
  • 08m 26s
  • 460 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in 2nd wave which was M40+. Swam at a better pace than previous races despite being boxed in several times to the point I had to stop and tread water. Swim felt easy, so I accomplished my goal of pacing myself there.
What would you do differently?:

Start further up in the wave to avoid some of the congestion
Transition 1

Comments:

Went very well
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 23m 30s
  • 8.31 miles
  • 21.32 mile/hr
Comments:

Not insignficant hill right after you mount. Had geared properly so no problem except for the guy in front of me who had not and he veered right at me, missing by what must have been inches. Started out conservatively to get the blood pumping in the legs and got passed by one guy. That gave me the motivation I needed and I chased him down and passed him about 6 miles later, but did not leave it all on the bike course, setting me up for a good run
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

I got a good racking spot and nailed T2 with a sub-1:00 time. Never dreamed I'd do that!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 24m 19s
  • 3.15 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Fantastic. For the first time I came off the bike and immediately, I mean from the first step, was in stride. None of the stiffness in the legs or pain in the lower back.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps push it a bit harder in miles 2 and 3, but not a lot.
Post race
Warm down:

ART session with my Sports Chiropractor who was volunteering at the race. Rehydrated 1 bottle of sports drink and 1 of water, ate a couple of bran muffins.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim congestion which really was lack of planning on my part. I stuck too close to the inside line; probably could have done better staying more outside.

Event comments:

HIGHLY recommend this race to first timers. It is very much set up to make it an enjoyable entry into triathlon. For more advanced folks, you have to be very aware of the high number of beginners as you will be passing a lot of them, of the actual race distances (estimates at best), and the ease of the course. That being said, as the first race of the season, it is a great warm-up.
