Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, shower, dressed out the door by 5:50. Ate three 120 cal. breakfast bars. Drank water prior to the race.
Event warmup:

Started my warm-up at 7AM. Ran 15 minutes at an easy pace with three 20 sec. sprints toward the end. Rode 25 minutes with a few hard efforts, but mostly easy. I was able to get down to the water and swim for about 5 minutes before they called us in.

Comments:

They had us start by lining up in bib order. When we registered, we were asked about our swim skill and I answered Good. I'm not a fast swimmer, 1:35/100 yard. So I didn't choose the first option of Excellent, but rather opted for Good. This got me bib 189. This turned out to be a mistake. It seems a lot of people think anything under 2:00/100 is excellent, and they were all in front of me. It was hard to get into a good constant rhythm while having to swim around/over slower swimmers.

However, that issue aside, I did much better than last race. I paid attention to my form much better than last race. I also laid off the kicking and felt fresher overall when going into T1.

What would you do differently?:

Next time doing a race held by TuxBro, answer excellent and get myself up closer to the front of the TT start.
Transition 1

Comments:

First clean T1 in three years. I've finally have a handle on taking off my wetsuit. It came right off with no issues. For a brief moment I felt like a pro.

Comments:

I put in a good effort. My mph could have been better, but considering the course, I thought it was pretty good. I still need to work on my bike form as I feel it is falling behind my swim and run, but this is a good indication that its not as far behind as I thought.
What would you do differently?:

Its one of those courses that the more you ride it, the faster you'll be. Its technical enough that experience matters.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Another good transition, racked my bike slipped on my shoes, took off my helmet and I was off.

  • 3 miles

Comments:

I tried to control my effort at the start so I didn't blow myself up on the hill. Once I got over the hill, I was able to get it up to about a 6:30/mi pace but I started to fade a bit after the 2nd mile. Ran most of the second mile at about 6:50/mi until going down the hill when I just let it loose into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I suffered about as much as I would expect for a sprint. Not much different I could do here.
Post race
Warm down:

I'm not much for warming down. I hung out with the kids, ate some cookies and drank some chocolate milk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had a good race, I'm not any faster than this result. I pushed hard the whole time.

Event comments:

Its a good race, good atmosphere. I'm not a big fan of the time trial start. I would have rather gone off in waves.
