Age Group Rank = 9/21
Pre-race routine:

Two bananas and one energy drink, a few tums. No pre-race bathroom break because only one stall available. Got there early enough to take my time and not rush.
Event warmup:

Water felt great. Did about a 100m warmup swim and it made a world of difference. Will definitely be doing that whenever I can. Got acclimated to water and visibility, etc.
Swim
  • 08m 41s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Held back at the start because I know there are a lot of beginners in this race, and as expected they all shot out of the start at full blast. I eased to the outside of the pack and passed most of them without much difficulty as they began to tucker out. Warmup swim made a huge difference because I was able to immediately get into a 4-stroke-breathe pattern right away.
What would you do differently?:

Need to swim more. I've neglecte this since IMAZ and paid for it in speed.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Typical. Uneventful
Bike
  • 29m 55s
  • 11 miles
  • 22.39 mile/hr
Comments:

This is more like it. I've focused on improving bike times and to get into top 20 is a success and no doubt the reason I shaved 2 minutes off last year's time. Granted, I rode the roadie whereas last year was on the crappy tri-bike so we'll see if these comparison times hold up the rest of the season. But I'm fairly happy with 22+ Mph for now
What would you do differently?:

Better bike would do wonders
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Again, typical but faster than usual.
What would you do differently?:

Quick tie shoestrings aren't a bad idea
Run
  • 24m 22s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 53s  min/km
Comments:

This is a fair pace for me even if it is a little off from the McKinney races where I typically do 7:30 with hills. This course is flat. I was a little winded coming off the bike. My weight gain probably played a role here too. It's obvious that so many of these folks are runners converted to triathletes because I put up solid comparison times in swim and bike, then rank 71st in the run, even with a sub-25 min 5k.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for speed if I expect to do anything in these short races.

Event comments:

Fun race. Short but challenging enough. Murky water. Not enough bathrooms
