Run
Comments: I tried to go out reasonably easy. The whole field went out pretty fast but I was trying to stay with in my self and run my own race. Followed the Garmin to keep my pace under control. Knowing that the bike is my best leg I knew that I would catch a fair number of the people infront of me. What would you do differently?: Not much. The pace was probably about right for the course and conditions. Transition 1
Comments: The rain slowed things down a bit but otherwise a pretty good transition. What would you do differently?: Done a better job of keeping my sunglasses clean prior to the ride. Bike
Comments: The ride itself went pretty well and was trying to keep it at a little slower pace than my last Oly Tri at Naylors Beach so I could save a little bit more for the run. Bassed on my HRM readings I was failing miserable at this task. I just couldn't get my heart rate to come down. Once we got into the course I was only passed by folks on TT bikes so I felt pretty good about that. What would you do differently?: I was debating riding with out my sunglasses at all but at a minum I should have used the amber lenses at a minimum. The darker lenses with the overcast and light rain made it kinda hear to see. It was like riding in an impressionist's painting for the whole course. I would also try to do a better job with getting fluids in the system during the bike. Based on how the run went I don't think that I am getting the right amount of nutrition in the system during the ride. Transition 2
Comments: No significant issues. What would you do differently?: Think about having something to cover up my shoes to keep them a little dryer during these rainy conditions. Not that it would have mattered much based on the standing water on parts of the course. Run
Comments: Once again this was where I truely struggled. This time I was able to get about a mile into the run before I bonked pretty good. After that it turned into a run walk effort with more emphasis on the walking part than running towards the back end race. What would you do differently?: I suspect that the problem is a mixed bag between pacing the bike and not getting enough fluids/nutriton on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Not much here since I was pretty much crushed by the effort just to finish. Mostly I was just trying to get fluids in the system and not pass out. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think that I am blowing enough fluids during the course over the 3 hour effort that by the end of the event my body is not reacting very well. Event comments: The course is pretty flat and if you are in pretty good shape you are going to do well on this course. The steps on the run course are not ideal but frankly I didn't think it was a huge deal. Perhaps if you are really flying on the course they could pose a problem but for us slow people it wasn't something that really botherd me all that much. The Olympic distance is still kicking my arse but with no swim portion it was hard to truely compare this effort against my first Olympic Distance at Naylors Beach. Race organization was pretty good and there seemed to be enough volunteers. The only thing that I would critque would be the late decsion to cancel the swim. Based on the water levels and the forecasted water levels there was no chance that the swim was going to happen and that was known days before the race. It would have taken an act of god to drop the river level at least 2 feet and with the rain we were getting that week. I suspect that the the late decsion was done to keep the no-show to a minimum. Other than that it is a decent race that I would do again. Last updated: 2013-06-26 12:00 AM

Packet Pick Up the day before deffinately sped up the process of getting the transition area set up. On the morning of the race I probably slept in a little longer than I should have so I never really had a proper breakfast prior to the race. "Breakfast" ended up being a cliff bar or two, gatorade and pre-race gatorade drink.
Not much of any.
