Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5am, very groggy from sleep aid meds. Ate simple foods: seaweed, apple. Already had my car ready from last night. Already had my bike set up from last night.
Drove over, and showed up by 6am. Only had to get timing chip and rack. Transition setup was a cinch.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike for 1/2 mile. Swam 100m.
Swim
  • 21m 56s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a bad swim for me.
I wasn't warmed up enough. I started off way to the side. I let the leaders get way ahead.
Apparently, I was 8th OA out of the water. But then there was a large run up a large hill. I was BEAT. I had to stop. I couldn't make it. I got passed by several more people on the simple run. That's when I got second in my AG in the swim by a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't taper enough. I focused much more on getting ready for the bike than for the swim. I did too many pushup the week before. My pecs till ache.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

I was so exhausted from that hill sprint that I was seeing stars. I had to stop and get water while totally standing still. It was a mess.
What would you do differently?:

Practice hill runs? No idea.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 23s
  • 40 kms
  • 36.88 km/hr
Comments:

I did well on this bike ride. When I rode it in practice, I was frightened of the potholes. This time, I rode them like butter. I felt fast, even though I was passed by about 6 people. But I also passed three people. I went fast enough that It would be really hard, but not so hard that I broke myself.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Post race
Warm down:

I was thrilled I wasn't running!
I chatted. I saw my wife/kids and waited for awards.

I really should've cooled down, though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim was a mess. I think my training has been too hard leading up to the event.
I really needed to taper more.
Also, I'm eating less to loose weight. That's made my recoveries groggy and more difficult.

Event comments:

I had a blast.
Epic Races does a wonderful job in running their races. There wasn't a single turn not marked well. It was smooth, fast, and nice.
