Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6 which was earlier than I needed to so I laid in bed for a bit. It was overcast but not raining, YAY, and last nights fog had cleared.

Got up and got dressed. Sorted out the dogs and had breakie. Just had my normal Muskie and banana - no cup of tea.

While I was eating breakie I decided that my speed laces were making my shoes too tight and because they were too short to loosen them I decided to put my normal laces back in. As you do 10 minutes before you need to leave.

Put my bike in the back of the ute and headed off a little after 7am smack on plan. While I was driving down the hill I decided that I wouldn't worry about using my bike shoes, that I would do the whole race in my running shoes.

Got to the venue at about 7:30 and parked easily. Got my bike out and rode the 1k to to the transition area. The wet grass had made the bottom of my shoes slippery and my feet kept coming off my peddles so I decided that I would would use my bike shoes and I would just suck up the extra minute or so that it would take me.

Picked up my pack and set up transition then hung around for an hour until my race briefing. I was very thirsty despite drinking nearly 2 litres yesterday and having a couple of glasses of water before leaving home.
Event warmup:

None really. Walked around a bit and did some small stretches while listening to the race briefing.

I don't have my official times yet - they take a few days to come through. Overall race time is from my watch.

Comments:

I had set myself the goal of running the entire race - no walking allowed!

I set off at a slow heady pace and just let every one take off in front of me. I wasn't last but I would have been very close to it. By the 500m mark I had got into a good rhythm and other people were starting to walk. I was passing people, a whole new experience for me while running - YAY!

I felt good the whole run even the poxy little hill into transition didn't bother me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I am really happy with how this run went. It might have been slow but that is where my running is at so all good for now.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Decided not to change my shoes as I ran into transition. Dodged around a couple of ladies stopped in the middle of the path, found my bike, hat off helmet on, grabbed my bike and headed out.

I ran the whole way through transition and passed a few people. I like this passing thing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Maybe get faster and more confident with the bike shoes.

Comments:

My goal for this leg of the race was to keep my speed above 20kph.

I spotted this lady with Crusty Clown hair and bight green calve sleeves just in front of me as I mounted my bike I set myself the goal of not letting her out of sight.

Headed off and my legs felt good. I forgot to turn on my bike computer until I had done about 2k and when I turned it on I b s doing over 30kph so I was very happy with that.

It turns out that my bike leg was the fifth fastest for my age group so that shows how much my run sucks.

The Crusty Clown lady got away from me she was just way too fast. I ended up spending most of the ride playing leap frog with another lady in a light green top. She passed me just at the dismount line, but then cause I ran through transition I got her.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more. Need to get more confident with drinking while moving.

Get bike serviced gears were a bit iffy.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Ran all the way through transition again legs were feeling good.

Bike racked, helmet off, ha on.

Comments:

I spotted Crusty not too far in front of me and set her as the target to catch.

My legs felt good and so did I, settled into a good rhythm fairly quickly and just kept running. Passed a couple more people too.

About 250m from the finish I remember thinking that I was starting to feel done, and it crossed my mind to walk especially up the poxy little hill but I didn't. I kept running, it wasn't fast but I was running.

Crusty was only about 20m in front of me but I couldn't catch her.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing happy with myself for pushing through and running the whole race.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and a banana and went for a walk.

Stayed and watched the under 23s and draft level pro event. Man those guys are fast.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of running experience and training. But I am happy with my race. I met the 2 main goals that I had of not walking and keeping my bike speed above 20kph.

Event comments:

Tri Events always do a really great job at their races.
