Swim
Comments: My goal was to expend as little energy as possible while still maintaining a respectable speed. I think it went pretty well. What would you do differently?: Probably could have gone a little faster without impacting my bike. Transition 1
Comments: Not the greatest transition for me. I was trying to make myself comfortable for the long bike ride ahead, so I took a few steps that I don't usually take in transition, like putting on gloves, heart rate monitor, and socks. Then when I put on my tri top all of the nutrition fell out of the pockets, and I only picked up a powerbar and left the rest of it on the ground. Then after running to the mount line in my shoes, I had trouble clipping in again. 12 people passed me during this transition, 3 of them in my age group. What would you do differently?: A lot of things. Bike
Comments: My goal time was a 3:30, so clearly I went too fast. I just felt so great on the bike that I didn't want to slow down, and it didn't feel like I was pushing that hard. Didn't eat as much on the bike as I planned because of dropping everything in T1, but I was vigilant about drinking enough. Also, this was my first time taking water from a bike aid station. Wow, I am not good at that. What would you do differently?: Slow down. My run definitely suffered because I went too hard on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: As soon as I jumped off the bike I could feel how tired I was. Once I got my bike racked, I took my time putting on clean/dry socks, getting into my running shoes, and drinking some gatorade before convinving myself to get started with the run. What would you do differently?: ??? Run
Comments: The run was brutal. Not because of the course, it would have been a lovely run if I weren't so tired, but from the beginning I just didn't have the energy I needed to get it done. I had to walk 3 times before the first mile-marker. Yeah, three. Not good. When I first started running, I looked down at my watch and it showed a 6:45 pace, so I tried to slow down but I could only get down to a 7:30 pace which is still ridiculously too fast for anything longer than a 5K. I basically ran about small spurts and then walked for 20-30 seconds for the entire 13 miles. The running segments started around .3 miles but gradually degraded so that for the last mile I was having trouble running for .15, and sometimes only did .1 before I had to walk. This was probably the hardest run I've ever done, but somehow I managed to finish. What would you do differently?: I need to work on my pacing still. For some reason it hurt more to run slow than to run fast, so I run/walked the whole thing instead of pacing like I've been practicing. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a little, then took a seat and had to try really hard to not throw up. Felt really bad until Jenn found me a Mountain Dew, which I usually don't like, but I think the carbonation helped my stomach, and my body probably needed the sugar too. What limited your ability to perform faster: I went too fast on the bike, and didn't have anything left for the run. Event comments: This was a great race! Loved the course, loved the atmosphere! Had to drive 45 minutes form hotel to start, so picked up a banana, muffin, and gatorade for breakfast and headed out. Had to set up two transitions, so went to T2 to set up before heading to the race start and T1. Took a little longer than expected, so by the end I was rushing and literally running around trying to get tires pumped and bottles filled before they kicked us out of the transition area.
Only had time for a few stretches before they started lining us up for the start.
