Run
Comments: Not sure how to pace myself for this. I started way in the back. Not a fan of the duathlons. Kept a good pace, and good effort. Only got passed by a few, and passed a couple from my wave and the wave in front of me. That being said. probably my fastest 1.8 miles I've ever done. What would you do differently?: Seed myself towards the front. I was way in the back. I couldn't keep the front runners in sight. This was a mistake. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition. Took off sneakers, put on bike shoes, grabbed sunglasses, put on helmet, grabbed bike and took off. Didn't strap left bike shoe tight. I had to tighten it after I got on bike. i was debating on stopping before I got on bike. I'm glad I did. I did that very well and didn't lose any time. What would you do differently?: I had the same issue that I do after a swim. Heart rate was high, and had the same dizziness that I usually get. I should practice this in the off season. Get my heart rate up, then practice my T1, either from running, or preferably swimming. Bike
Comments: cadence was right at 90-100rpm. Speed was at about 20 mph. I felt I could have gone a bit harder. but I was cranking the whole time. Only once did I slow up. It was on a decent and there were four people ahead of me. I did not feel they had the cycling skills to handle a pass where we were combined with the wet roads. I did not want to risk passing and crashing. It would have been a long slide. Max speed was 33.9. If I was peddling, I could have gone to 40. HILLS. I actually did well. One huge hill. a few other hills. The big hill stalled a lot of poeple.I sat in the saddle for most of the hill. Got out of the saddle and cranked up and over. Only got passed by two people. one I repassed right away. What would you do differently?: maybe try and crank even harder. Push more, and once my cadence drops below 90 rpm for a couple of minutes, drop a gear. Need to drink more on the bike. I had a couple sips of water. Two drinks of scratch labs. Need to drink more. Transition 2
Comments: Counted 6 rows for my spot. i went down the 5th. Not sure if this hurt me or not. Went around the end, and put my bike back in the rack. Shoes off, super shoes on! helmet off. and away. What would you do differently?: bike next to me was right on top of my stuff. i should have looked around to see what others were doing. but, it only limited me a bit. not too much. good transition Run
Comments: good run. Felt pretty slow, but this is one of my faster runs. Still worried about my heel. got caught by a guy with 39 on his leg at mile 2. tried keeping pace with him but lost him with less than a half mile left. found out after the race, that he was in the collegiate wave. so i actually beat him by 3 minutes. I was really struggling and looking forward to finishing. My son likes to finish with me. I was a little worried about him slowing me down. I wanted to finish fast as this was my last race of the year. Saw the finish area. Lots of spectators, then I saw my wife with her(my) bright yellow jacket, and heard her yelling to myles that 'here comes daddy, get ready'. he saw me, and took off. Sprinted right for the finish. I had to kick a bit to catch up to him. Not sure I could have finished that strong without him. What would you do differently?: Not sure I drank enough drink during the bike. It was run fitness that slowed me down more than hydration though. Post race
Warm down: had some water and real 41 candies. tried a granola bar, but didn't agree with me. walked around. stretched cheered my teammates when i saw them, and waited for my friend to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: pacing on that first run, pushing a little harder on the bike, overall run fitness from my injury this summer Event comments: race started an hour late due to weather. max performance puts on a good race. great venue. first time there, weather possibly stopped vendors from showing. I liked this venue much better than the previous venue. although the parking lot where transition was was huge, and no cars were allowed to park there. the other lot was alot smaller and probably better suited for transition. food was okay. choice of burger, hot dog, or pulled pork, side of rice and beans. everything else was something you had to buy. very long line, waited till late, and split a burger with my wife. Woke up at 5:30. had waffles with peanut butter. Stopped at D&D and got a coffee. Picked up my firend and drove to the race site.
Race start was pushed back an hour due to lighting. Swim was cancelled due to 2-4 foot swells, and rip curents. VERY disappointed, but not a safe swim. Changed to a duathlon. 1.8 mile run 11.6 mile bike and 3.2 mile run. Not a big fan of duathlons. i don't know how to pace myself for that first run.
Helped friend navigate transition. Walked him around transition and showed him how to set up and get acclimated.
Had my gu chomps at 9:30.
Stretched, and did a quick warm up run.
