Swim
Comments: The swim had me really worried. I have only been swimming consistently since the beginning of the year. Goggles started leaking almost immediately. Stopped 3 times to dump them and tighten them. kind of pissed me off because I had just used them the day before with no issues. started bilaterally breathing but wound up only breathing on the left after a while. I never breathe on just one side in training, but for some reason racing, I've only been comfy on the left. I was sighting good, but b/c i was only breathing on one side, i was pulling myself away from the bouys. I really happy with it though as this was my first HIM and I couldnt believe how comfortable in the water i was. What would you do differently?: focus on bilateral breathing. Transition 1
Comments: T1 took some time to put socks on, and gather my thoughts from the long wade in and then from the run up the beach. Bike
Comments: My knee has been bothering me for the last several long rides over 2.5 hours. I decided I would take the bike easy and hold between 16 and 17mph. the course was a 2 loop out and back. I made it to the first turn around and couldnt take it anymore. I turned it on and tried to average 20mph for the remaining ride. Knee started barking somewhere around 35 miles, but worked thru it and comfortably finished the ride. Every 10 min i was drinking Nuun, every 30 min I took a gu. Transition 2
Run
Comments: The first 2.5 miles of the run were great, then the road became an unmaintained 2 track sand road. It was tough. water, heed, and sponges at each aid station. took my gu bottle with 5 gels, and took them periodically in the last half of the race. A hamstring cramp popped up right after the turn around so i took a gu and walked a little. I got 2 more throughout the run, but worked thru them. What would you do differently?: probably should have continued the gus on the first part of the run. Post race
Warm down: walked back out on my course to find my dad. Once he finished, went in sat in the kiddie pool in ice water and had another coconut water. What limited your ability to perform faster: For my first half, I was really happy. Event comments: the aid stations on the run were less and further apart than in the athlete guide, which given the conditions was a huge potential issue. I was ok, however I know the later half athletes really struggled. Last updated: 2013-07-17 12:00 AM
