Swim
Comments: The buoys were really hard to see, because the first heat's swim caps were orange, the same color as the buoys. What would you do differently?: Just practice more. Get a swim coach to help with technique and speed. Transition 1
Comments: Even though my bike shoes were lined up, I accidentally grabbed my running shoe! Thankfully I only put one on and realized what the heck I was doing and slipped it off and put on bike shoes. I got everything else on ok. What would you do differently?: Put items in left to right order, as I guess that is how my brain works. Bike
Comments: there are a lot of turns on this course. the hills were not long, but often came right after having to slow down to turn. I almost fell once when my front tire got caught in a pavement seam. I am not sure how I recovered, but it was scary and I think it made me more hesitant for the rest of the ride. What would you do differently?: I would practice turns more, at a fast pace. Transition 2
Comments: I couldn't get my bike racked like I intended because it probably should have been in backwards to fit in properly. When I tired to slip it under rack to rest seat on rack my aero bars were too high. I ended up just leaning my bike on frame holding up the bar. Probably not what I was supposed to do, but I was losing time. It didn't fall over or anything, so I think it was ok. What would you do differently?: before race practice racking bike so that I know which way works best to get it back on the rack. I also would just practice the transition more. Run
Comments: HOT and lots of wind, but never at my back! I don't really like this trail as I have not had good times when I have run it. It starts out with a hill, but there are not really any major downhills to speak of, so I don't really gain any momentum. What would you do differently?: I would try to get used to this trail and work more on speed work. It seems I struggled to get my fast twitch muscles to fire to gain any sort of speed. Post race
Warm down: I was so hot! I used the complimentary cold wash cloths to help bring my core temp down, but placing them on my face, and neck and wringing cold water on my chest and back. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat was a factor for me on the run. I also think I probably could have used a little more hydration on the run. Event comments: The volunteers did great! There were plenty of them and they were nice. Some of them wanted me to walk in the transition area (even without bike). I guess I thought you could at least run in transition area, so not sure if they were misinformed or if I am. The event was organized, but was basic, which is ok. Good music. I wish more spectators would have been on the run route as it was rather lonely along the trail. Last updated: 2013-07-17 12:00 AM

I got up at 5:00, made coffee, and finished getting my things ready. I wanted to make sure my tires were ok, as I had just put new ones on the previous day. I wanted to make sure I had enough time to repair them incase a tube had gotten pinched or something. Tires were fine. I was not very hungry, as I had eaten later than I had planned on the night before, but I ate a banana and a piece of raisin bread toast. I didn't get a full night's sleep two nights before and I had an ok night's sleep the night before.
This time I got my stuff laid out then went in the water for a short swim, just to get a feel for the water and buoys. I was glad I did this. Took pre-race drink right before the swim, so that I wouldn't have Jitters during the swim.
