Swim
Comments: Were starting 20 people every 15 seconds; jumped off the barge in the middle of it; took me a while to get out of the pack and over to the outside of the swim lane (towards the middle of the river), which was where i wanted to be bc current was strongest there; once there, i wasn't always sure i was staying there (towards outside) and seemed to drift at times back towards the shore; otherwise, swim was good; last 100-200 yards were brutal, as the lane narrowed and all swimmers were condensed into a tighter space, wave chop picked up and water became pitch black from the soot at the bottom being churned up; maintained a good pace through out the swim, never pushing too hard but also not taking any real breaks; it was a nice, steady, consistent swim What would you do differently?: Get to the outside more quickly; site better, making sure to hug the buoys; map out the swim course visually better prior to race start Transition 1
Comments: Need to cut this time down! Couldn't find my bike despite having identified a great landmark (Guru banner) to site off of!; 2440 overall rank; did a lot in transition... washed off feet before putting on socks, took gu, applied sunscreen, put on bike shorts over tri shorts, put on cycling gloves and cycling cap and googles, took off watch i wore for swim and put on gps watch... time adds up. What would you do differently?: I do too much in transition, with everything above - applying sun screen, washing and drying feet, putting on gloves, changing shorts, etc Bike
Comments: Lost my water bottle only about a mile into the ride! Popped out of the back water cage... and it was the one i'd frozen the night before with water, so only had accelerade after that; took coach Sam's advice to not push too hard on the bike and save something for the run, and that was good advice; still came in with a nice PR; avg speed: 17.9mph; max speed: 38.7mph; max cadence: 198 (is that possible?!?) What would you do differently?: Secure the water bottle better after using it; perhaps have a third one on the bike; had a bit of an upset stomach towards beginning of ride... may have tried a new gu Transition 2
Comments: Seriously need to improve T times - 2376 overll rank What would you do differently?: Again, did too much in transition - reapplied sunscreen, took water and gu, took off cycling shorts and put on TL tri shorts, etc Run
Comments: Run went well; happy with the performance, pace, etc. Legs were on the verge of cramping most of the run, but never fully did; came closest once when i stopped to walk, so i couldn't walk too much, continuing to run eased the almost cramping a bit; cramping was largely around the right VMO and hamstring (right in the center); stopped at first few aid stations, but not last one; passed a few TLers on the run, including Robinson, Frantz and Grace; running thru the TL cheer zone was amazing!!! You could hear those drums for blocks in both directions! But was also exhausting! It took me a couple of blocks to bring my HR back down; definitely pushed it hard on the run, and last two miles was dying to take a short walking break, but never did except for the aid stations; ran a mile or two with a guy who was keeping a great pace, but i eventually dropped off from him; last mile was tough, but pushed thru it pretty well; tested the mental discipline What would you do differently?: Some stomach issues at about 2miles... poor nutrition / hydration choices? May have taken too much gatorade at one of the aid stations; need to get better about pouring water over my head to keep my core temperature down Post race
Warm down: Cold towel; bananas, oranges, muscle milks, water... stretched on my own; then to foot massage tent, stretching tent and massage tent; continued to snack on whatever was around the festival, but generally felt pretty good; then got beers w my amazing lady Dalia Event comments: Gender place: 993 / 2376; great race and very happy with overall performance; first triathlon in three years (since 2010 NYC Tri) and an overall PR by 15 mins, and a PR in each discipline - by 1 min in swim, 7 mins in bike and 5 mins on run, between the prior three times i've done the NYC tri.... it feels great to be back!!!
