Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:20. Got kids' stuff ready for sitter, little bit of coffee and cinnamon roll (yeah, yeah...they were just sitting there), then a quick shower. Double checked my bag and we were out the door by 5:05.
It was still dark out and I rode along pretty quietly. Had some traffic issues as people waited for parking garage, but we just went to our usual lot as soon as we could. Still had plenty of time.
Stopped at bathrooms (yes, they have non-portos), short line then into stall aaaaand no TP. WHAAAAT??? Yeah, race morning and stalls are running out of TP. lol Oh, the looks on people's faces when I told them. Maybe I should carry more tissue next time because no one else had any.
Event warmup:

Stretching and wandering the area. Got marked up. Watched the pros start the swim. Ate a Stinger Waffle. Met Bill from RWB. Quick porto stop and chatted with a lady from San Diego while we waited...man held the door for me and said "Have a good time." Ummmm, ok? I'll just assume he was talking about the race. ;)
Swim
  • 22m 26s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

750 isn't a long swim, but it's the longest OWS I've done...ever. So the whole sighting thing that I did better with on my last 400 OWS went out the door. It could have something to do with swimming in a 25m pool for 4months. All I know is that the "rescue" boat headed for me after the second turn and I had a hard left to make it back to the pack. I was bumped around a bit and thought I would get to the outside to avoid it. Ummmmm...guess I went a bit too far outside. I'd love to see a video of that swim. I know I looked like I was under the influence. I may even check YouTube for "drunk triathlon swimmer".
When I finally got back "on course", I knew I was being passed. Oh well. Made it to the last buoy and turned for home. At the stairs guys grabbed each arm and I thought they were pulling me up. Then one let go and there went my balance. I ended up sitting on the step with people trying to come up behind me. Why, oh why, is this exit such a problem for me????
I'm really bummed that I got so off course because I felt good the whole time. Breathing was great, and I wasn't nervous or getting tired. Was quite comfortable...except for that staying on course thing.
What would you do differently?:

I need more long OWS sighting practice. And figuring out how to let them haul me out of the water without looking like an idiot.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Loooooong run from swim down to the far end of transition and all the way back to bike. Ran. Hard.
Wiped off feet. Socks/shoes on. Cap off /helmet on. Bike off rack and ran to mount line...passed two people as we ran out together.
Didn't hold back on this one.
What would you do differently?:

Not much until I decide to go sockless.
Bike
  • 38m 37s
  • 12.32 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Knew after the swim that I had to push hard on the bike. I started passing people right away. Yelled HI to DH as he went by the other way a few minutes ahead of me. About 1/3 of the way through a lady passed me (it wasn't happening much) and I saw she had a good pace going. Decided she would be my "follow that!" bike and I found out she thought the same about me a few miles later when I was passing her. We shared some mutual admiration of each other's riding and chatted a bit over one of the bridges. It was really cool...and then she passed me right after a turn around. We went into the last couple of corners together, and I pulled into dismount right behind her.
What would you do differently?:

Can't think of anything.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Decent transition. Rack bike. Helmet off. Shoes traded fast. Race belt on. Took in a Gu as I ran towards exit. Bumped into bike lady coming off her rack...found out her name is Holly.
What would you do differently?:

Thought this one went well.
Run
  • 30m 27s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran out with Holly and legs were stiff. We grabbed water at the first stop and then she was... off. The volunteers along the run were great. Lots of energy and even making us laugh. Overheard people talking about a couple of them afterwards. Unlike the last TTL race, there was a nice cloud cover. Yes!
People started passing me in the first mile. Right now I pretty much expect that on the run. There was a girl in pink/black that I decided wouldn't get out of sight, and she didn't. We just chugged along. Quite a few strong 50y/o women passed with encouragement for us slower ladies. Getting into mile 2 I passed a few people as I felt my legs loosening. They were tossing water on us at the last stop and it felt great.
Having a hill in the last mile wasn't much fun, but knowing there was only the bridge and the homestretch left made it easier. I went by a couple of guys over the bridge as I kept pink/black in sight. I guess I don't yell ON YOUR LEFT loudly because I almost got bumped off curb when a guy didn't know I was there. Oooops. The sidewalk is narrow for two people on the bridge and the bikes were riding right next to us. Turned the last corner and pink/black was right there...I think I was about 5 seconds behind her at the finish. Announcer said her name and scrambled for mine as I hit the mat.
DH and icy cold towels were waiting at the finish :)
What would you do differently?:

Need to do some brick work to help with legs off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, oranges, banana, bagel. DH and I had to leave pretty quickly since he had to get home, pack and drive back to airport by 1:30. Headed to transition to grab bikes and walk to car. Stopped for a post-race pic. Of course we hit DD for iced coffee as we left town.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperienced swimmer and slow runner.

Event comments:

Hope to do this event again next year. Well supported and fun.
Oly maybe?
T-shirt is not my favorite design. Comfy but not anything special visually. Same with finisher's medal. Good quality bottle opener (yes, quite useful) but not a creative design.
