Swim
Comments: I've seen butterflies that took a more direct route. At one point I looked up and I was closer to the kayaks than to the pack. I kept drifting right. What would you do differently?: Don't rent a wetsuit for a late July event. MUST learn to breathe bilaterally. Didn't sight enough. Transition 1
Comments: I timed 5:13. I did OK. There was an enormous run with the bike - maybe 200-300 yards going out and coming back. Something - a stray breakfast muffin? - got stuck in my clips. It took me about a mile to clip into my pedals. What would you do differently?: Didn't need a shirt - over 70 degrees. Need some water on hand to rinse the salt water out of my mouth. A swallow of water would have been nice, but not essential. Bike
Comments: Went pretty well, after I was able to get clipped in. I passed a few people, and of course the fastest people passed me. Had no problem getting out of people's way. Rode barefoot - no problems. What would you do differently?: No shirt - over 70 degrees. Get into a good tuck faster - made a tremendous difference when I did it around mile 10. Transition 2
Comments: I had 2:56. Long, long run, in some ways harder than the 5K. What would you do differently?: Went OK - as above, no need for shirt. Run
Comments: I think the organizers mislaid the mileposts. By them, mile 1 was 7:45, mile 2 was 7:23, mile 3 was 7:36, and the last tenth was 2:42. What would you do differently?: Run went OK. Fought the desire to slow down effectively, thinking of how sprints are all about pain, how Nora talks about the all pain from running distance. I successfully countered my body's feedback ("I'm tired, let's slow down.") with "Feedback THIS." Post race
Warm down: Walked around. After I got home, I ran 3 miles with Nora (she needed a route, since we're on vacation.) After that I stretched. What limited your ability to perform faster: Zigzagging on the swim. Event comments: Not enough room for bikes. Also didn't like the fact that the people who registered first had the worst spot in transition. Should be the other way around. Also needs more water after the race. You were handed a bottle at the finish, but that was pretty much it. There was a cooler of water, but you had to ask around to find it. And it was located right by the board where results were listed, so it was impossible to get to. Last updated: 2013-07-24 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5. Boiled egg and bowl of shredded wheat for breakfast. Glass of orange juice. Coffee.
Things I did right - got foot powder in shoes and got them ready to slip into. Ate a good breakfast. Took GU 15 mins. before race start. Got bike into a low gear, ready to ride.
Things I could have done better. I got to race site at 6:10. Should have gotten there at 5:45 for 6:45 start. As a result, I wasn't able to lay out all my stuff. So I forgot to put on the timing chip, realizing my error about two minutes before the start, with no time to go back and get it. So all the times you see here are my hand times. I also didn't have water to rinse my feet, though they weren't too sandy. I also didn't get marked, which is not a big deal.
Swam about 50 yards in the ocean. Not bad, but didn't really get the heart rate up.
