Swim
Comments: My 2013 poor swim outings continue. I haven't been swimming as much as I should, especially with this HIM and USAT Nationals in 2 weeks. I have never been fast but my endurance was great last year when training for my IM. What would you do differently?: More swim training Transition 1
Comments: 2nd in AG +5 sec from fastest. Bike
Comments: I played cat & mouse with a guy early and then a gal late. I thought the wind was supposed to be out of the NW but I got a little confused on the course. It wasn't much but was noticeable at times. I tried to work hard and not let my HR get too high, aiming for 145 avg based on last year's 2 HIM and 1 IM races, so at 142 avg I was good. What would you do differently?: Course was longer by a mile, Jerry even said something at the awards. Transition 2
Comments: 1st in AG -4 sec from guy who was faster than me in T1. We were the fastest by far. I picked up 1:13 on the 1st place guy combined. What would you do differently?: Good T2 Run
Comments: Last 2 years I've had cramping issues. My right hamstring was tight the whole way but never caused any real issues. I had some discomfort in my feet, right foot early, left foot late. I wore my Asics race shoes which I did not wear last year for my IM and marathon. I did wear compression socks which I also wore at IM and marathon. Maybe for longer than Oly I should wear my Brooks training shoes. I was getting sore, especially in both quads at the end. Less run training time than in past and I felt it. I felt like taking a walk break a couple of times but one of my goals was to not have to walk due to cramps and I certainly didn't want to walk just because I was tired and a little sore. Weather was much better than last 2 years which were both really hot. This was a big factor in the non-cramp run. What would you do differently?: This was probably the least trained I've been for a HIM. I'm feeling it the day after the race. I think I've decided not to do a race longer than Oly next year. I feel I need a break from the longer distances, I don't feel as motivated to put in the training time. Post race
Warm down: I stood in line for 10-15 for a massage. Just my legs but I think it helped, although I' don't remember being this sore a day after the race. . What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. Event comments: This is my 4th Chisago HIM and also one Chisago sprint in my knee recovery year. It's a big race but well organized. Photos are T1, T2, T2, start of run and end of run. I was 3:04 faster than last year, even with the extra mile on the bike. I was slower on swim and bike but made up for it on the run. I won this AG last year but was 2nd this year by 7:19. 1st place guy beat me by 9:15 on the swim. Last updated: 2013-07-29 12:00 AM

Stayed at a new hotel. Country Inn and Suites instead of AmericInn. Not much difference, can't remember why I switched. We went to Vanelli's on Sat night. I did not sleep well which is rare for me now the night before a race. We also parked just past the park on the east side instead of the west side. We got a lot closer.
My transition spot was right on the edge by the parking lot so Barb could be right there. Chisago has assigned spots based on when you register and then they do waves of 100. I was 225 so wave 3. I was on the end of the rack which is usually good but it was a high traffic area so not so good. Fortunately the 3 people next to me did not show up so I could slide down and had plenty of room. I got a short bike, run and swim in and ready to go.
